I was so hopeful tonight when I was able to take this new kitty to the vet. He was quite scared, but with lots of help from the techs and the vet, they were able to get blood drawn. I think I was in denial. So hopeful that things would be ok. I've had luck in the past rehabilitating kitties that were not in the best of shape. But sadly his tests were as bad as it can get. He had Feline Leuk and Kitty HIV. Such sad results. We figured he was about year old. So, his prospects having both conditions led me to make a hard decision. For my healthy kitty's sake, and the likelihood of a bad outcome for this kitty, I decided to have him euthanized. I feel a mixture of feelings. I know that I gave him love and care these last two months. He also able to be inside (a separate room from my other kitty) and get all the food he wanted. But it is so sad.
We named him Midnight (the group of techs, the vet and me). He deserved a name. It is so hard...I just did this two months ago. But I know we did the best for him with such bad odds stacked against him. |

Oh Beth!!!!!!!!!!
I am sure you gave MIDNIGHT a great couple of months. It was good he found you. I am sorry you had to make that decision. Maybe it was meant for you to find each other. He could have had a very bad experience for the rest of his life if you hadn't taken him and found out about his conditions. What you did for him was truely a great thing. He did not have to suffer. I hope in time you will open your heart to another furbaby in need. Hugs to you and Angel Midnight!!!!!!!! |

I am so so sorry. I was hoping for the best. Seems like most strays turn out to be the most loving. I know it must have been so hard, but it was the right thing to do b4 you got overly attached and had to see him suffer or have your other kitties get sick. Can they get that if one has it????I feel so heartbroken over this as if he was my own. I guess I was just hoping too hard...Ann

I am so sorry to hear about Midnight. I was following your story in the other section about making this new friend and then today I read there you had posted here cause something had happened.
I am glad he found you and you had some time together. I am glad you did have him checked out at the vet and am sorry the news was not good. I agree with Sissycat that Midnight, on his own as a stray, might have gone through a lot of suffering before he passed. Maybe he was sent to you to help him. He was so young..but then those diseases know no age. I remember my 3 cats born feral in my backyard and when I took over their care from their wild mom...I immediately also took all 3 to the vet to be tested and defleaed. I was relieved their tests were negative but it is sad to think of all the strays out there and what kind of life do they have, especially when the diseases come. Then a few years ago, a stray showed up here and was perfect for a neighbor but he said he "couldn't afford" to pay for the blood test. So I charged it. That stray was okay. (I found out later he did have the money to declaw that cat..which was more expensive than the blood tests). Again I am glad you checked him out as soon as possible. Making that final decision is never easy but please remember why you did decide and also that you really saved him from needless suffering as his body would be fighting a disease it could not win. You gave him peace. Bless you for that. -------------------- LITTLE GUY - May 28, 1991 - Sept 10, 2007 - Always in my Heart.
