This question may not fit here, but maybe somebody can help. Every since Kiva died, my house has been overrun by fleas. I didn't even know he had them, but now they are everywhere. I had the house treated by fleabusters, but they are still all over the place and biting me and my kids. It might take a few more weeks. Do any of you know anything that will repel them from biting us? Something we can put on our legs? It is really horrible. They are even in our beds, and weren't while he was alive. I don't get it. I read about lavender and was thinking about spraying it in our beds.
Thanks,
Mimi

I learned about fleas the hard way...nasty little critters and so ugly!! Boric acid powder I have been told if you sprinkle it will smother them. You must have had a recent hatching, they can lay dormort in corners, va%% cleaners, the eggs are so small and they look like pepper. I have went to the extent before of bombing my house and spraying raid along the edges of the walls and then a good shampoo. Those things can travel a mile in a day....good luck! Pamela

You'll probably have to have the entire house treated a few more times before the fleas are gone. Only hatched fleas are killed (their eggs are very resiliant) so each time you treat the house you are only killing one generation. The eggs hatch a couple of days later and they're back! Only problem is that they keep laying eggs. We had a bad case of fleas here once and the only way I could get rid of them was to treat it like lice. You have to wash EVERYTHING daily (linens, towels, clothes), vac%% daily (at least once) and try to vac%% out your couch (and beds) as often as you can. Keep getting the place treated and keep cleaning like you've gone mad and the fleas should be gone in no time.

I couldn't find anything that would stop the fleas from biting to spray on my body but I've heard that some bug sprays work well. This may sound silly but you could aslo get a few cheap flea collars and stash them under the beds or in the couch.

Best of luck,
Kristie (fleas suck!)

Hi Mimi, When the fleas were so bad this summer my vet recommended Virbac Knockout E.S. which I bought at his office. It is a spray and it kills not only the fleas but also the eggs. I had my furbabies and the grand fur babies in the house most of the time. So it seemed the fleas took over.

We were being eat up by the fleas they bit my husband's legs and bit my back and we were itching like crazy. We cleaned the carpet and let it dry and then we sprayed the stuff.

You don't want to stay in the room for very long after you spray but it did the trick. I guess it acts something like a flea bomb and it worked well and we didn't have fleas the rest of the summer. He also told me to put flea collars in the vacuum cleaner too. The fleas were real bad her in Michigan and everytime I went to the vets people were talking about what a bad year it was with them and all the things they were trying to get rid of them. I guess it has been a bad year for people trying to fight the fleas.

Hi Mimi,
You are doing the right thing by having fleabusters come in. I had them come out once a year to clean and treat my carpets. But the down fall is that it takes time to activate. The stuff fleabusters puts in the carpet will go into the vacuum so you don't need the flea collars in the vacuum (what a great idea!!). Also fleabusters doesn't work on the eggs, you have to wait until they hatch and then they eat the crystalized stuff and starve to death. It eventually works. I needed something that my children wouldn't get poisoned or sick from and the same went for my animals. My Indy was alergic to fleas and was biting himself all the time . . . I can remember the sound like it was yesterday and trying to get his attention to stop!!! The only thing I can suggest is to wear socks and long pants for a week or so and try a flea collar under the bed, as another poster suggested, that might work but eventually the fleabusters stuff will work and it lasts a year and is guaranteed, at least where I used to live it was. Good Luck, ChrissyW

Thank you all so much,
I'm going to do some of your suggestions. Geez, I had no idea. Poor baby. He didn't scratch that much and I never saw them in the house. Unless I'm totally oblivious. I bought some stuff today at the natural pet store to spray on the furniture, our legs and the bed. It has essential oils like pine and citronella and lavender. Supposedly it will repel them. And I'm going to go ahead and put a flea collar in the couch. Good idea. Well, thanks again.
Love, Mimi

Hi! The plant pennyroyal works totally good to repel fleas, and is harmless to use, but do not put any on the face or ears or hands or paws. Some drugstores still have it, or you can get it from most natural food stores and maybe some other sources. Use the pennyroyal OIL. I have used this and it works very well. Smells good too, as it is a member of the mint family. I think it does not kill them, but it does repel them. I have de-flead cats with this, and I saw the fleas all jump off the cat immediately. But never put any on the face or ears or paws. Maureen
