My kitten Sebastian is always licking either me or Joey. No idea why! Is it the same as why dogs lick? To show affection?

My boy, Lucky, does the same thing. I would be interested in hearing what others think also.

It is a happiness and affection so far. Like when I am fixing food. I used to wonder if he was testing the skin he was licking before taking a bite but he doesn't bite.

Frankee and Jasper are big lickers too. I think it's because of affection but they both like my eyelids OUCH!

People say that cats are super clean because the clean themself after each meal. When is the last time you saw a cat getting anything on them while they are eating? I'm throroughly convinced that they "clean" themselves to spread the smell of their food all over them. Then they walk by another cat as if to say, "smell what I just ate!"

Oh I have to agree it is affection!!! Most definately!!!! Before loosing Sissycat she would get into bed with me and lick no matter if it was my hand, arm, leg, etc. Then she would go to sleep. I think it is their way of saying I Love You!!!!!!!!! Just like some cats drool and then rub it on you. They are marking you as theirs. Rubbing their scent on you so other cats know.

Anyway that is my opinion.

Grooming is a pretty universal social and bonding activity among many animals. I guess it also starts when the mother cleans the kittens, too. There has to be affection there.
If I eat snacks, Iggy licks my fingers but there is an element of greed involved in that. He wants a taste of whatever I eat.

tribble used to lick on me when he got all riled up, furious licking and then maybe a nibble. i did enjoy it nevertheless

oh, i moved this to the cybershoulder forum. it seemed to fit better there than in the new beginnings forum.
