It's been almost 3 weeks since we had to Doodle PTS because of the corona virus and FIP. We took our last remaining cat 11yrs old and 21 pounds to the vet for a check up last night. With the exception of being overweight and a little arthritis in his shoulder he is doing good!!! Excellent. I was a little edgy last night at the office, the last two times I have been in the vet's office it was not good and I lost two of my babies.
Our vet told us last night when I asked when she thought it would be safe to get a new kitten that she really didn't know. The corona virus is so complicated and there isn't a lot of concrete testing or anything else to give answers to. Our vet is going to get in touch with a cat specialist at Virginia Tech and see what their advice might be.
I'm not completely ready to get another kitten, I miss Doodle so much, but after the holidays I wanted to start thinking and planning on a new little one in our house. For the past 15 years there has always been "my cat". Woody is my husband’s cat; although he and I love each other it just isn't the same. I'm an only child and I'm selfish that way and want "my cat".
I'm also not good at someone or something else being in control of my life and the decisions I make. Like I said I'm selfish, giving to others most of the time, but I am selfish with what I want.
Thanks for listening,
Kathy

Kathy,

Giving a new kitty a good home and lots of love is far from selfish. Especially when we know how much pain losing them causes us. I hope it works out for you. My boyfriend has 2 cats and they're nice but they are not my babies. I just don't feel it. I'm good to them but I do look forward to having my own baby again someday too.

Good luck with the advice,
Sandy

Thanks for understanding smile.gif about wanting my own babies. But I'm wondering if I just need to get over it for now and hold off until Woody is no longer with us, which could be 5-10 years from now he is 11yrs old. I don't know, I'm confused, disappointed and all together discouraged.
They say everything happens for a reason...wonder what this reason is?

Kathy,

I'm so sorry you lost two babies, especially so close together. I hope you get another baby sooner than later, because there are so many out there that need a great pet parent like you. I know very little about FIP, so please forgive me if this is a dumb question, but is it possible to vaccinate a new baby against the disease?

Diane,
There is a vaccine but most vets don't give it because it hasn't been proven to be effective and there have been some cases where the cat developed FIP 2 weeks after it was given.
This is a confusing virus; the experts still don't know a lot about sad.gif
Maybe this will all work out...just have to be patient and that isn't one of my best qualities.
Thanks for caring it means alot to be able to vent to others that understand.

Kathy, Don't fret over getting a new kitten. This is alot like looking for love. If you look you probably won't find it. A new kitty will come to you when it is time, and it will be right

Be Well,

Sorry, I forgot to mention when I responded to your FIP post that my vet also didn't recommend the vaccine, because of the danger.

I think you will know when to get a new kitten. I also understand about wanting your own baby.

Thanks to all of you for understanding about wanting my own kitten. I'm just a little lonely and need the companionship of a little furry loving creature. I just need to be patient and let things work out. It just feels like being punished, not only did I lose two of my babies, now it may not be safe to get another one.
Boo Boo's Mom thanks for your advice about the cleaning etc.
They say good things come to those who wait, so I guess I'll wait.
