It's been almost a year since my puppy died of cancer and I wanted a new puppy right away, but since I live in a dorm and my dad didn't want to take care of it, I haven't had the chance. But my friends and I are moving off campus next year so I can have a new furbaby!!!!
Now the questions:

Where is the best place to get a new baby?

My friend also wants a cat. Are there particular breeds that are better "friends" with other animals?

I want a breed that doesn't shed. What are some?

I also want a small baby. Like a yorkie or something. What are the best breeds?

Are there better, more well behaving breeds as far as housebreaking and things like that?

Not sure about the other things but PetFinder.com is a good place to start. You can search for pets in your area that are in need of a home. Good luck finding your new furbaby (or furbabies).

Puppy farms are run by people who care only for capital. They constantly breed pedigree bitches to produce as many puppies as possible to make as much money as possible. In doing this they breed diseases such as Mithral Valve Disease which finally killed my dog 3 weeks ago. The puppies are not cared for, and many are ridden with disease on birth.

Why not take yourself to your local animal shelter and rescue a dog or cat?

Toy Poodles and Bichons don't shed ... neither do Miniature Schnauzers ... and all are small breeds. If you take a new puppy you can train it to get on well with cats. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats, and they all love each other ... Animals are how they are raised. Many people warned me when I got my Jack Russell terrier - Coveu - that they were bad dogs which couldn't be taught, especially as he was already 8 months old when I got him.

I don't know a whole lot about dogs since I'm pretty much a cat person. From what I've discussed with dog owners in our rescue group it appears that it's easier to attack the problem from the other direction. Start with a friendly dog that is not too aggressive and then find a cat that has been kept with and is used to being around dogs.

If you find one it will be a miracle! Perhaps a chihuahua or similar short-haired breed would be a possible candidate.

They all have their own special traits. I would suggest that instead of shopping for a particular breed that you spend time with individual dogs up for adoption. Some mixed breed dogs can be wonderful companions and you will be giving a home to a dog who will be very appreciative of your love.

Even within breeds, each dog is an individual. We have had two Yorkies over the years. They were completely different in temperment and behavior.
