It has been a year since my beloved Smokey passed. A lot has happened since, a new dog and a new baby. I feel guilty sometimes because I wish he could be here, but I know he is watching. I still miss him so and think about him everyday. My heart goes out to you all, it does get better, but it never goes away, which is good in a way. I will always remember Smokey and happy and sad feelings mean that I loved him and that will never change.

I think it's really very thoughtful and kind of you to come here to let us, who've recently suffered loss, know that life does go on, new pets and people come into our lives, and our memories of our departed pets are made brighter by those things. Sometimes I know I get so caught up in my thoughts and grief that I tend to lose the "long view" of things, and with some surprise and new pain I realize it's been x number of weeks or months since my loss. But you're right, the grief doesn't go away but that in itself can be a good thing. I'm sure your new dog benefits from Smokey having been in your life. Thanks again - Barbara

Hi Kelly-

I remember when Smokey passed away. It was right after Lucy my lab died and I remember your postings. I agree...a lot has changed for us too in one year. We have a new dog and another new cat. I think Lucy would be okay with it, just as I am sure Smokey would be proud that you have been strong enough to move on but still keep his spirit alive. I just posted Lucy's one year tribute a couple of weeks ago. I haven't been on LS in awhile and just started re-visiting as her one year approached. I am glad that you are doing well. As I know, you never really "get over it." It is a process, and you just go through different phases.

Take care of yourself...Caroline
