My story is about a Pit Bull named Missy (my little girl). She was 4 1/2 wks old when my son brought her home. I swore I would NOT have a Pit Bull in my house, so down to the basement she went. After many hours of hearing her cry, I went down with a comforter and alarm clock to keep her calm, but no luck. Half an hour later down again, with a hot water bottle and a baby blanket. I thought she was fine, but she waited an hour and cried again. The third time, I picked her up looked in her face and she kissed me and kissed me.. Well, needless to say, Missy never saw the basement again in life.
Missy was to be my son's dog, but mom walked her, fed her, took her to the vet, and bought her all her toys to spoil her rotten. She became mommies baby. Although she looked fierce and although people have such horrible things to say about Pit Bulls, my Missy was the love of my life. You see, Missy loved me more than anyone or anything in this world. She slept on the water bed with me and in almost 13 years, not one night went by that I left my Missy. One thing Missy did have was fear aggression. She was scared to death of the vet, and the sad thing was they were of her too. She didn't do anything, just did a soft growl, but the horrible thing was the vets diagnosed her from afar. They never got close enough to even check her little heart. They asked me questions, and I more or less became her vet. So needless to say, I shopped from vet to vet, with no luck.. They were all the same. One day, I noticed a lump on the back of her left leg. I immediately called the vet and took her down. His response, "oh it's ok, let it go, she'll be all right, now get her out of here." "I will put her on steroids that will help." I trusted him, I thought he cared, but he didn't. To him my Missy was just a Pit Bull, a dog nobody cared if they were alive or dead. Well, Missy's lump grew and off to a second and third vet I went. Cruel, careless, heartless they were. Till finally I found a vet, a woman, a vet who loved and talked to Missy who petted her - who made her feel comfortable and safe - who made Missy's tail wag and made her smile! Yes, Missy could smile, a beautiful wonderful smile. That was March 2000. We tried every option of what to do about Missy's lump, because she was truly concerned. Her medicine was phenomenal, she was on so much. That didn't matter to me, as long as she was happy and alive. Well Saturday August 19, 2000, Missy started to throw up blood. Four months before her 13th Birthday. Monday, August 21, 2000, I had her put to sleep. It was the hardest and most horrible thing I ever did in my life. My little girl, the love of my life, she trusted her mommie to take her to the doctor to get her fixed up and mommie didn't bring her home. For that I will always blame myself and I hope that anyone who reads this knows that Pit Bulls yes, Pit Bulls are wonderful dogs. They are kind and loving and beautiful and my Missy was the best and most loyal and wonderful friend I ever had. For people to hate and despise them the way they do, is so sad. For my Missy was the love of my life! If not for those vets that didn't care, she would be alive today. But when my Missy went, I thought back to the night in the basement, when she was just a baby, where I looked into her face, and she kissed me. On that sad day in August, I kissed my little girl goodnight for the last time. Barbara B. - I live in Pennsylvania and have owned and loved my Missy for almost 13 years. Dear Barbara,
I'm sorry for your loss of Missy and even more sorry that you had such a hard time finding a vet to treat her. Take comfort in knowing that Missy knew that you did everything possible to keep her healthy. She's knows that it wasn't your fault that you couldn't find a vet that was willing to care for her. I agree with you, Pit Bulls can be wonderful dogs. My parents adopted a pit wire hair terrier cross years ago...she was so sweet and so loyal. You're in my thoughts. Kathleen PS - A wonderful dream! We have several no kill shelters here, unfortunately they're all full 99.9% of the time. -------------------- Shiloh and Hobbie, you're both gone from my arms, but forever in my heart.

I'm a little confused about who wrote this post but it doesn't really matter. Of all the dogs, Pit-Bulls have acquired the worst reputation. For the most part, I don't believe "bad" animals are born, they are made, through negligence and deprivation. Like many popular animals today, in-breeding and cross breeding can be a major problem. I've met Pt bull and Pit Bull mixes that were the the sweetest little babies you could ever imagine (I use "little" as a term of affection, not size). Yes, part of me worries that a Pit bull could just snap. But I don't know if that fear is justified. It is based on the reputation they have obtained. Couldn't the vets have asked you to muzzle her? It's funny. I've found most of the feared dogs to be the sweetest. Pit Bulls, Rottweilers...the biggest babies you've ever seen. It is astounding the number of violent criminals that have had abusive upbringings, although humans ultimately still have the capability to make a choice between right and wrong, animals are not blessed with that level of consciousness. I am sorry that you had such a hard time finding a vet to treat your sweetheart with the same care every other dog deserves. I am also glad that ultimately you found one who did. My heart goes out to you and I am so sorry for the prejudice you found in trying to obtain treatment for your dog.

Barbara, I am so sorry for the loss of your Missy. I did not think that vets would turn any animals down. Maybe we are still just living in a society where people have so many fears and people tend to stay away from what they fear. Still that is no excuse for any vet to act that way. Your little girl was very much loved by you I could see it in every line you wrote. I am so sorry for your pain.
