We just got him home now for 3 hours its so glad to have him back I have never being so excited to go to the vet .I asked the vet about the bird droppings but he did not think this was the reason for the seizures more than likely the kidneys failing. So the vet pushed tru fluids for 30 hours to flush the toxins ,now we give him a dog sports drink every 15mins to keep him hydrated and to flush the kidneys .We are putting him on a modified diet and no more dry biscuits . Hopefully this will stabilize him and from what we have read dogs CAN live healthy lives for 2 to 4 years .He is old being 14 but that doesn't mean a death sentence we could still have some years left in him yet caring for him properly and being strict about administering his fluids and diet We are still very worried as we are not out of the woods yet but fingers crossed ! .As you all know we are so so happy to have him home .Lastly any of you guys in countries that have kidney dialysis are lucky (if you can afford it ) because we don't have that option here in Australia .We are a very small country but you would think the option would be there ! We are not rich but we would find the money somehow for this as dialysis is the best thing he could have .Well i will keep you all posted and any advice is always welcome wub.gif

My name is Michele. I'm new here and I empathize greatly with your post. My baby, a smart mellow, Bichon Frise, developed seizures. It's very hard, terribly frightening because the reaction is to assist. The seizures that my dog "Wally" had, were Grand Mal seizures, people have them as well. Phenobarbital is a drug given to humans with Epilepsy and my Vet prescribed that medication.

I know the sounds. Is your pet frothing or urinating during these events? Please know that I have been through it and I can only tell you how my Wally went through them and how OUR VET explained them. We learned so much that is helpful for "Teddy Bear" if these continue. There is hope and sometimes it goes away.

We always talked to "Wally" during these frightening experiences. I hope you have a great Vet. who really listens to your feelings.
You are not alone in your experience.

Thanks Michele , Firstly he made it tru the nite with NO SEIZURES we are very happy that he might have stabilized not having any seizures for the last two nites.I phoned the vet this morning and he was very pleased with his progress. The seizures were terrifying to us ! luckily I grew up on a farm and have fairly good animal husbandry skills ,he has no teeth left so making sure his airway is open and clear is by depressing my finger on the back of his tongue but it still freaks you out because we feel so so helpless.Fingers crossed they have gone with flushing fluids thru him.The vet seems to think it is fluids that he needs rather than drugs. We are taking it one day at a time at the moment.Every minute we spend with him is like a wonderful gift ! wub.gif

Warren and Chris, my heart sank when I saw your first post. You two have been through a really tough year. Thank goodness you knew what to do when Teddy Bear had the seizure. I hope that the fluid treatments will eliminate the seizures. It sounds as though you have a good/supportive vet. I will pray for Teddy Bear to recover and pray for you two as well.

This is really good news about Teddy Bear. And yes, every day we can still have them with us is a blessed day indeed. I wish you two and Teddy Bear many more days with quality to life.

He knows you are helping him. Give him a hug and a kiss on the nose! Such a good boy!

4 nights NO seizures we are so so happy and relived .Hopefully we have stabilized him with the fluid treatment ,He is eating his new diet drinking by him self playing with the other dogs ,barking at the door, its great. We still watch him closely monitoring him all the time.We have an appointment with a naturopath who works with animals she sounded great on the phone and told me she can definately help build up his kidneys and immune system with natural herbs ect..This is working in conjunction with our wonderful vet!.We will take more bloods probably Tuesday so we will know more after we get his results. Our vet who we trust impeccably has said there is really know guide to what might happen as every animal responds in different ways to treatment but the main thing was to stabilize him so we hopefully we are over the first hurdle. Will keep you all posted but once again thank you all so much your support as always has been fantastic ! If anyone has any advice on kidney failure or has been thru this we would luv to hear about it wub.gif

Well we just got the blood results back from the vet his creatine and urea has dropped by half but is still very high his creatine levels should be between 30-90 they were 595 now they are down to 295 still quite high but at least they have dropped same as the urea so here is hoping that they continue to drop will keep you all posted !

Dearest Dottie,We love that movie ! and anything you ever send me is always ok because I know it's from your heart wub.gif Yes the levels are still very high BUT he is stable and seems to be happy. He is 14 so we are still taking one day at a time. Some questions are now coming up like his quality of life verses pain and suffering while he is stabilizing we will monitor him closely I would never want him to suffer. From what we have read and talked with the vet about, Teddy more than likely would of not remembered the seizures that he was out to it.He came to the park today for a walk and you would not think anything was wrong with him.Who knows how long he may live but we know in our hearts that we have and will do the right thing by him .He has been the most faithful loyal loving companion and best best friend for 14 wonderful years so far so he deserves the most high quality care we can give him.Caring for him and all the events that have taken place over the last week has drawn us away from all the pain of loosing Mummy .We still miss her and Freddie so much but they will remain in our hearts forever and that can never be taken away ! but we need to focus on our beautiful family that remains and keep them health and happy for many more years to come smile.gif

Hi, Warren. I'm Mike. I've lost 4 dogs over the past few years... 2 to acute renal (kidney) failure. 2 to liver cancer.

It sounds like your pup is having issues with chronic renal disease, so the answers are different.

Follow the symptoms. If Teddy Bear is eating, that's great. Loss of appetite is a sign of a worsening problem. The vet will probably want to put him on a kidney diet... if he does, do it. It makes for less work for the kidneys, and will hopefully keep Teddy Bear ticking happily along.

To have this happen so soon after your loss seems really unfair. I'll keep you, and your family, in my thoughts. God bless.

Thanks Mike,
I am sorry to hear of the loss of your fur babies.Yes the vet has put him on a kidney diet we bought some tins of it home with him but after reading about this food we were a bit worried so after taking him to the homeopath he is now on NINGA RED ,kidney tonic and fresh organic beef mince with grated carrot ,parsley and spinach .We are giving him fluids every 40 mins! We are amazed at his reaction to the fluid therapy ,diet and the tonics. The NINGA RED is all organic with wolfberrys from China being the main ingredient with fantastic healing properties. So for the moment we have our little boy back! he seems happy, nearly back to his old self its fantastic we are so relieved that we have stablized him and that he is happy. The vet will do more bloods in a fortnight so heres hoping that his kidneys have some function and his levels continue to drop. His creatinine is down to 295 from 595 but should be 30-90 so its still very very high.
Will keep everyone posted wub.gif
