Near the end of my teaching year I got a call from one of our deans. A student had found a kitten in his car engine after driving to school. The kitten escaped and several staff members chased her all over the parking lot until they finally caught her. He knew that I was involved with cat rescue/adoption and wanted to know if I could help. Otherwise the kitten would be sent to the local pound and probably would be euthanized. I got the kitten who was in a box and took it to my room. The little girl was terrified and had obviously never been handled by humans before. I couldn't get off of work so my wife came and took her to the vet. Her tail was broken, probably from the fan belt of the car. When I found this out I told my wife to rush her to our local vet immediately. The vet removed about an inch of her tail.
Now for the great news. One of my students offered to foster the kitten indoors. After talking with her mom we agreed to do this. After a day with the newly named Gabriella they fell in love with her and decided to keep her permanently. So now Gabriella has a great indoor home with a very loving family. They say that she has quickly become a complete lap cat, curling up with them on the couch. I saw Gabriella again when they brought her back to the vet to have her stitches removed. The difference was amazing. Gabriella was feisty and very friendly. She has gained a pound and looks great. I am so happy that Gabriella will have a good life after such a terrible start. Her new mom is crazy about the girl and spoils her. Here is a photo of Gabriella being held by her mom shortly after the surgery.

Reading your story of Gabriella is very touching. To think you and your wife cared so much about a kitten brings me tears of joy. No doubt this girl will shower her new kittylove with all the attention and love she deserves.
