Full Version: Going On 4 Days Missing...

My wonderful cat 'Bubba' got out of my home on Sunday evening July 22nd sometime between 9:10pm and 10:20pm. My other cat Bella also got out, but I recovered her about 5 hours later. Here we are coming on 4 days missing and no sign of my sweet baby boy. I am beside myself with guilt and grief. I feel like a horrible person for this happening in the first place.

What happened was, the place I am currently living has no dryer vent. So the dryer hose is stuck out the window of the laundry room while the dyer is running. The laundry room door is always kept shut whenever the window is open. I am so paranoid about the cats getting lose that I even keep the winter storm window in all year around so I remove it and replace it each time I am doing laundry. Well, Sunday night on my last load of laundry either I did not get the door completely shut or somehow Bubba managed to get it open. Their little box was sitting in front of the door so he could have easily stood on top of the lid. I don't know what exactly happened and at this point it really does matter.

I have looked everywhere I can think of. Posted an ad in the local paper, on Craigslist, gave flyers to the neighbors and hung them around my neighborhood. Offering a reward for his safe return. I have looked every single day after work and on my lunch hour if it allows. I have slept in the laundry room for the last 3 nights with the window cracked enough to hear any movement outside.

The last two nights the wet cat food I had set out was gone early in the evening, during the brief time I actually did fall asleep. Then the last three nights at 4am I hear the glass bowls moving around on the cement and my heart fills with hope only to have me peak out the window and see a possum happily eating the food. So my plan B for tonight is to find myself an observation point and stay away and observe the food bowls no matter how bad my body is fighting me for sleep.

The worst part of this whole situation is we are moving!! I can't even think about that right now, I don't even want to talk about it. I can't just move and leave him behind of there is a possibility he is still out there waiting to come back to his loving family.

Tonight I have an appointment with Hilary Reniassance as I have seen a few others on this board have used her services with success. I am excited and this gives me hope that perhaps tonight will be the night and my baby will be home and I can continue on with our moving excitement. Right now I am cringing every time someone I work with brings it up.

I just want my baby home, and at this point I would give anything.

Hi, alleria, please permit me to offer you my sincerest condolences in the missing of your precious Bubba. Our companions are very adept at finding ways of taking unfair advantage of loose doors or cracks in windows to disappear. And of course they do not think of all the dangers that are out there in the world when they do this - - but we - - their caregivers - - are all too aware, and our hearts are bound in fear when they disappear.

I can certainly understand how upset you are about the prospects of moving, and the heartbreak of not having your precious Bubba back home safe and sound with you. I presume you have also contacted the local shelter(s) and veterinary offices just in case someone would come in with Bubba as a rescue. Also sometimes local radio and TV stations make free public announcements. Have you thought about contacting them to ask them to make an announcement about Bubba and the reward? As you have discovered, unfortunately, putting out food does not always guarantee it will provide the results we want - - the safe return of your precious Bubba. Please know your precious Bubba and you are in my thoughts and prayers that you will be reunited.

Thank you so much for sharing your precious Bubba with us, alleria. Once again please know your precious Bubba and you are in my thoughts and prayers, and please do let us know how things go.

Peace and blessings,
moon_beam

I did distribute flyers to vet offices and called all the local shelters as well. I just finished my appointment with Hilary a little while ago, and my husband who didn't believe in that sort of thing now does.

Hilary believes Bubba has passed on, attacked by an animal probably a raccoon. That would make sense as we have coons that are constantly getting into our garbage, but I never thought they would attack a cat. Of course knowing my Bubba, he probably would have went up to a coon hoping to play with it like it was another new friend. The coons here have young, so I have heard they can be even more aggressive then.

Hilary said Bubba was attacked, he got sick and then went unconscious later passing over. The area she described to me where he had went after the attack was behind our shed exactly. (which is right outside the window he escape through) My husband and I tried looking for any remains tonight, it was raining heavily and had rained heavily over the last few days off an on. It is possible they could have taken his remains back to their den as well, since she feels he was attacked the night he escaped.

I am not going to give up on him just yet, but the things she said would explain so much. She told me that Bubba had visited with me, and last night as I was laying in bed I swore I felt like he was there. I didn't think anything of it at the time tho.

I can only say that right now I am just numb. Attached is a picture of my beautiful baby boy.

Alleria, I'm so sorry for what your going through...but please don't give up hope! It sounds as if you're doing all the right things. Shared wisdom says that indoor cats, if they get outside, tend to stay within 5 houses of their own. You might try hanging something of yours (covered in your smell, like a used towel or pillowcase) outside near an access point for kitty. Also, the best time to go searching and calling for your cat is between 2am-4am when your neighborhood will be at its quietest. Try shaking a can of treats...or scraping a can lid against the opening of the can (if he's likely to come for wet food). Don't forget a flashlight! It also wouldn't hurt to ask neighbors to check sheds, garages, basements if you haven't already done so. I really hope the person you consulted is wrong...and Bubba comes home....and we will have the pleasure of reading a happy update from you!

Thank you!! I hope so as well. I will try looking tonight between those hours, as now I am finally able to have two free days to devote to nothing but looking for my sweet boy. Everyone keeps telling me cats do come back, or he just went into the woods behind the house. We have had bad thunderstorms off an on for the last few days so if anything maybe those are the cause for him not making his way back home.

Thank you for your reply, and I also hope to be posting a happy update very soon!

Hi, alleria, thank you so much for sharing your precious Bubba with us - - what a very handsome young lad he is. When I was a little girl a family cat disappeared for 6 months. He finally came back home on the eve of my birthday. I hope and pray that you and your precious Bubba will be blessed with a happy reunion, too. It is always frightening when our companions disappear on us despite our most diligent efforts to keep them safe, and as time goes on with their disappearance our hearts hurt with the fear that they have come to harm. Please know you and your precious Bubba are in my thoughts and prayers that he will come home to you safe and sound, and please let us know how things go.

Peace and blessings,

Thank you for your thoughts, it is appreciated from both Bubba and myself.

Well, we are only about 45 minutes away from 5 days. In these 5 days there has not been one single sighting. Is this normal? Or could Hilary be correct? She said it happened quickly, and shortly after he got out of the house. The pain of not knowing is killing me. I just can't believe there hasn't been one single sighting of him.

My heart is broken.

Please allow me to add my hopes and prayers that you and Bubba are reunited. I had a ginger cat Hobbes who disappeared in a similar fashion years ago. I was doing laundry; the landry room just acorss the way fom my apartment, and he slipped past me. I did see him again weeks later in a yard by a house on my walk from there to the grocery store. He actually seemed to recognize me and had clearly been neutered (something I could not afford at the time I had him) days later a moving van was there and I never saw him again. My hope was that he'd found a home with that family and they took him with them. Your Bubba is sweet handsome looking ginger man cat. I'm so hoping you find him.

PS: My nick name for my current Ginger cat Tang is Bubba.

Awww. My Bubba actually started out with the name of Jacob. Then, when my now husband moved in he started calling him 'Bubs' and that kind of graduated to 'Bubba' and it just stuck. lol He knew Bubba more than he knew Jacob.

Alleria, my heart goes out to you. Bubba is such a
sweet-looking kitty boy. I do hope that he is still alive and
that you find him. I'm right behind you in not giving up yet.
Have you thought about "borrowing" a neighbor's dog? You
could let the dog sniff a blanket that has Bubba's scent on it
and then lead the dog out to the shed and let him/her sniff
around and try to find Bubba that way. I've read that racoons
do indeed sometimes attack and kill cats, but it isn't that
common. And why did Bella come back safely? Bubba may
be stuck in someon's shed or garage or something like that. I
do hope so much that you find him and that he returns safely
back home.

I actually have a dog myself, Abby a yellow Lab who was close with Bubba. Since he has disappeared every time she is outside she is pulling me to the area behind the shed that Hilary described. She is constantly sniffing around the plastic barrels and such that are back there. That worries me a little bit. I spent the morning walking around the property calling for him hoping to hear his meow, but I have heard nothing. I also found out today that there is a fox who hunts in the nearby field. Hilary said Bubba was attacked by a "small animal. Fox or raccoon." I just assumed raccoon since I have seen them around here, I had never seen the fox. The lady who comes to the property to care for my landlady's horses told me about the fox. She asked me how long Bubba was missing and and I told her going on 6 days and she just had that response, you know, that was like "Oh no."

I am still holding onto hope that Hilary was incorrect, and Hilary herself told me she hoped she was incorrect but it's getting so hard. We are preparing to move after the 1st of the month, and that is making this whole situation even worse for me. I hate the uncertainty of not knowing what happened. It's hard for me because one minute you feel like you are grieving for him and then next I am putting food out on the back porch.
DannysMom
Alleria, I didn't know you had a dog. Could you just let Abby loose by the area where she is pulling you to and sniffing around? She may track Bubba down. Could he have fallen into one of the plastic barrels? Maybe he got stuck somewhere. You may not necessarily hear a meow. I think Abby could find him if you let her. Wishing you all the best.

Thank you. I tried leaving Abby loose however, nothing really came of this. I think it confused Abby, she has really never been out doing the hunting thing. Abby is more of a, chill all day and relax type of dog lol. I did check in all the barrels, several times over the last going on 7 days now. I can't find a thing. Me and my hubby went looking last night from 2:30-3:30 am. I had a few excitements, in the field behind our house I saw two sets of eyes in my flashlight and got very hopeful because they weren't up high enough to be one of the horses or a deer. So hubby shined the car headlights on them, turned out it was deer laying down in the field. Ugh! I keep opening the back door half expecting to see him standing there waiting to be let in.
moon_beam
Hi, alleria, thank you so much for sharing with us how you're doing. I am so sorry that your hopes were dashed with the deer. I do know the burden that is in your heart with your upcoming move and the prospects of not having your precious Bubba with you. However, even if this worst case scenaro should happen, be sure to update your information on your flyers, craigslist, local vet offices and shelters so that you can be contacted just in case your precious Bubba should become a rescue. And as hard as the move may be not having your precious Bubba with you, remember that your Bubba's love goes with you wherever you are - - for love is eternal.

Thank you so much for sharing your precious Bubba with us, alleria. Once again please know your precious Bubba and you are in my thoughts and prayers, and please let us know how things go.

We checked there. There really is no way to get under our trailer. There are 2 access doors on the foundation, but they are both secure. Just to humor myself I opened them and looked anyway. I got a call last night and I got so hopeful, a lady at one of the shelters I called had a friend that found a cat matching his description. She directed me to her Facebook page to see a picture of the kitty, and unfortunately it wasn't him. This boy had black mixed in his striping, which my Bubba does not. I sure hope this boy finds his home though.
DannysMom
Alleria, I am sorry that you haven't found Bubba yet and that the facebook lead turned out to be a different cat. I know you were hoping so much it would be Bubba. I know this is so hard for you, and I do hope so much that you still find him. Stranger things have happened, and if you feel in your heart that he is still alive and out there then he may very well be there, just waiting to be found by you. Please don't give up just yet.

Thank you very much for your post! It is getting harder and harder as the move looms closer, I can barely bring myself to keep packing in hopes that if I can delay it just a few more days thats a few more days I have to look for him. My current landlady lives next door to my place and she promises she will call me if he turns up. I just hope she holds true for that, my husband says she probably will as she isn't going to want a cat hanging around a place she is trying to rent.

But I am hoping he may still show up before we move. Miracles do happen.
moon_beam
Hi, alleria, thank you so much for sharing with us how you're doing. I'm very glad your landlady has promised to contact you should your precious Bubba come back to his current home after you move. I can so feel the hurt and sorrow and uneasiness in your heart - - what was supposed to be a happy time in your life is now dampened by your precious Bubba's disappearance. Still, our adventurous furkids have been known to reappear weeks, months, and in some cases even years later, when hope of ever seeing them again has long dissipated. Some have even been known to become stow-away world travelers before they are discovered and returned to their loving family. Faith is the thing hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. So - - keep the faith, alleria.

I hope today is treating you and your family kindly, alleria. Please know you and your precious Bubba are in my thoughts and prayers, and please let us know how you're doing and how things go.

I can't believe it but tonight will come up on 11 days that my baby boy has been gone. I thought for sure many days ago he would have come home and been crying on the door step. I was outside again last night at 4am, looking around shining my flashlight in the fields hoping to catch the glare off a familiar pair of eyes. There was something out there last night, I couldn't tell what it was. I called 'Bubba, come here my baby boy.' like I always would do. Whatever it was ran, so I don't think it was him. I would hope that if it was he would have come to me.
Whatever it was it looked to have too short of legs to be cat, it almost looked to have a ground hog type of body. Perhaps a coon? I'm not sure, but I will be going outside tonight around the same time to see if I can catch another glimpse of this creature. The days are dwindling, as we have to be completely out of our place no later than the 15th. The landlady would really like it if we could get out of there by Tuesday because we are only paid with rent up until then. I am trying my best to gain more time, but unfortunately it's not something I can control. The moving truck is coming on Saturday, and I will at least be dragging out some extra time to make sure the place is "extra clean."

I hate this pain of not knowing what happened. Even if something did happen to him, at least I would rather know so I can grieve properly. I can't stop the feeling of guilt I am having for our move. What if we move and then he comes back? I know this sounds crazy, but I don't want my baby to think I abandoned him. sad.gif
moon_beam
Hi, alleria, thank you so much for sharing with us how you're doing. What you are feeling is very normal when you share with us: ". . . I don't want my baby to think I abandoned him." The "not knowing" is a form of grieving, and it doesn't matter what the circumstances are - - your precious Bubba is missing, - - this is a very painful loss because he is not physically with you and you do not know why. I hope and pray you can find peace in your heart about Bubba if you are not able to be reunited with him prior to your moving date. He obviously knows you are moving for he heard you talking about it and began to observe the packing process. So he knows that whatever happens you have not abandoned him. And he can never feel abandoned because he holds a piece of your heart in his heart. My mom gave a plaque to me many many years ago with an inscription: "The best gifts in life are tied with heart strings." You and your precious Bubba are forever bound to one another through the eternal love bond you both share - - whatever the circumstances may be.

I hope today is treating you and your family kindly, alleria. Please know you and your precious Bubba are in my thoughts and prayers, and please let us know how you're doing and how things go.

Alleria, I said a prayer for you today that you would get Bubba back and find out what happened to him. I do hope so much that he returns to you safely. Sometimes miracles do happen. Keep searching, keep looking, don't give up yet! If your heart is telling you not to give up then there is a reason for it.
alleria31
Well, as of today we are all moved. I will be turning the keys into the old landlord tomorrow. It has now been 15 days since I have last seen my baby boy. I hate to say it but I kind of felt him with me as we were there finishing up some things. I swore a couple times I even heard a kitty meowing and I would frantically look everywhere but he was no where to be seen.
I still haven't given up and I wrote my landlord a letter with several phone numbers incase he would show up so someone could go and retrieve him as soon as possible.
My hubby talked me into going to look at a kitty who was up for adoption. I ended up adopting his brother, as when I picked up the brother who they call Topaz he instantly started to purr and I knew that he was meant to come home with me. He's not a replacement for my Bubba by no means, and even months down the line if Bubba and I are reunited I would be thrilled to see him.
I haven't brought Topaz home yet, as I wanted to wait till we were a little more settled trying to keep his stress down as much as possible.
But that is my update for now. Hope you are all having a wonderful evening!
DannysMom
Alleria, I am sorry to hear that Bubba is still missing now that you are moved, but it is good that you left your phone numbers with the landlady. You're doing everything that you can, and I hope that Bubba will come back to you. I can't even imagine what it's like to know that one of my fur kids is missing and not knowing what happened. I know that has to hurt so much and you must be worrying so much about him.
Thanks for sharing with us about adopting Topaz. I hope that he will get along fine with Bella and Abby and that he will bring you much happiness. smile.gif

Hi, alleria, thank you so much for sharing with us how you're doing. Please permit me to add my sincrerest condolences that your precious Bubba is still missing. I can so imagine the pain in your heart not knowing where your precious little boy is and why you cannot find him when you hear him. You are doing everything in your power to try to bring him safely home to you again.

May I also add my congratulations to your new precious furchild Topaz. I know he is coming into a home where he will be loved for who he is. Each of our furkids are loved individually, as each of our relationships with them are individual. Your precious Bubba will always have his own special place in your heart and your life no matter how much time passes or how many wonderful furkids you will love in your earthly journey.

Alleria, once again thank you so much for sharing with us how you're doing. I hope today is treating you and your family kindly, Please know you and your precious Bubba are in my thoughts and prayers, and please let us know how you're doing and how things go. Thank you all for your posts, hope all is well with you.

I am in panic mode. I was informed that on Thursday our new landlord needs to have 2 windows replaced in the house. My husband will be home, but I am not going to be able to. I am in full panic mode that everyone will be careless to my kitties and someone will get outside. Ugh. I hate this feeling. I wish I could be home just to make sure everything is ok. I am going to have to get a plan together and figure out which room can be their "safe room" on Thursday. I think a sign on the door is also in order, "Please do not open!"
I will be happy once Thursday is over!
moon_beam
Hi, alleria, I can so understand your panic about having contractors in your home and keeping your precious companions safe. You are dong the right thing in choosing an appropriate room to secure your precious furkids in, and posting a sign on the door. Also, if you have an adjustable gate you put in the door frame in front of the door when it's closed this will provide an extra barrier for anyone opening the door for whatever reason.

Have you also considered boarding them at the vet hospital for the day? I don't know if this would be feasible - - but it is another option. This way they would be totally out of the house in a secure place and you can pick them up when the work is done and the contractor is out of the house.

I know you will be glad when Thursday is over with. Please know you and your precious companions are in my thoughts and prayers, and look forward to knowing how things go.

Peace and blessings,
moon_beam

Everything went well today with the contractors and the windows. The kitties were in their safe room and no problems arose.

I have been thinking about my precious Bubba a lot lately. I still miss him terribly. I have a collage of pictures on my computer screen saver and work and many of them are of him. I will leave them, no matter what. I enjoy looking at pictures of him.
I would like to share this one of him cuddling with his buddy Bella.
moon_beam
Hi, alleria, thank you so much for sharing with us how you're doing and the wonderful picture of your precious Bubba and Bella. I'm so glad things went well yesterday with the contractors and your precious companions. I know this was a BIG relief to you.

When our precious companions go missing and time passes without them coming home I do know from first hand experience how disappointing and heartbreaking this is. My hope and prayer is that your precious Bubba is safe in the protection of a Good Samaritan who has taken him in to take care of him in his time of need. Rest assured that your precious Bubba's heart will always belong to YOU.

I hope today is treating you your precious companions, and all of your family kindly, alleria. Please know you and your precious Bubba are in my thoughts and prayers, and please let us know how you're doing. And thank you again for sharing with us how things went yesterday with the contractors.

Well today marks 1 month officially that Bubba has been missing. I can't believe it's only been a month, it certainly feels longer. I work not far from when I used to live where Bubba escaped from. I ran into my old landlady today at the post office when I went on my lunch hour. I asked her if he had been seen and she told me that he had not. I am starting to think more and more than Hilary was right, especially after being told about the foxes that hunt on the property.

How long is too long to keep paying to have an ad in the paper? I almost can't bring myself to pull it tho sad.gif

Little Leo is doing well, and his personality is starting to shine. I love him, Bella, and Abby so much but there is still a missing piece there. I honestly, would pretty much give anything to know exactly what happened to Bubba.

Hi, alleria, thank you so much for sharing with us how you're doing. I am so sorry that your landlady was not able to give you more encouraging news about Bubba. For whatever my advice may be regarding your question "How long is too long to keep paying to have an ad in the paper? I almost can't bring myself to pull it tho" - - I would encourage you to continue the ad for as long as you feel comfortable running it. Of course this depends on how expensive the advertisement is and your financial abilities at this time. Simply put, I encourage you to follow your heart - - you can't go wrong doing that.

Missing your precious Bubba does not diminish the love you share with your precious Bella, Abby, and Leo. Bubba is a very important part of your life - - and he will ALWAYS be a part of you. So please let me try to reassure you that what you are feeling is very normal "Little Leo is doing well, and his personality is starting to shine. I love him, Bella, and Abby so much but there is still a missing piece there. I honestly, would pretty much give anything to know exactly what happened to Bubba."

Alleria, thank you so much for sharing with us how you're doing, and sharing your precious Bubba with us. I hope today is treating you, your precious companions, and all of your family kindly. Please know you and your precious Bubba are in my thoughts and prayers, and please let us know how you're doing.

Peace and blessings,

Thank you for your reply. The ad ran out yesterday, and my dad suggested maybe leaving it out a week and then sitting down and re-wording it. Being more descriptive about the location because I had put our street name in the ad, but he said someone might not know exactly where it is which is true. I think I will re-write the ad this week and put it in again for a couple more weeks and see if anything turns up. I get at least 1 call a week from it, obviously they are just dead leads. At least people are seeing it though. I am going to put more thought into what I want it to say since I kind of wrote it up when I was frantic and he had been just missing for a couple of days. I scribbled down whatever came to mind. Hopefully a new fresh wording will attract some attention.

There might be a glimmer of hope after all!!

Last night my mom called me and said that one of her friends drives the road I used to live on almost everyday. She told her there was a farm there (within about a mile) and there always has been a bunch of cats there and they are all friendly. She told my mom that she had seen a lighter colored cat hanging out there. She gave my mom directions on how to get to this farm so after work we are going to go check it out.
Figure it can't hurt, got nothing to lose. It could very well be Bubba, he could have easily found this farm and ended up staying there with other kitties and some place that there was food.

I hope I hope I hope!
This day at work can't go by fast enough!!

Hi, alleria, ohhh - - my heart is hoping that your precious Bubba is there on the farm waiting patiently for you to come get him. Please let us know how things go.

Just a quick update, I did check out the farm and no sign of the "yellow cat" HOWEVER!! I am so anxious but a woman from the area where we lived called me last week to tell me she had seen a yellow cat and now her friends have the cat on their porch!! They saw Bubba's picture on Craigslist and they are almost 99% sure it's him!!

It's time for the boy to come home, it's been 2 months now!

Alleria31, this would be so wonderful if the cat on the porch turned out to be your precious Bubba! Please let us know how things turn out!

Well, it was another let down. However, it goes to show you there are some very kind people in the world. 3 people came together to help me see if this was my boy.

The original lady I talked to has seen another similar cat in her backyard and is trying to keep tabs on him/her to maybe see if that is my Bubba. I thank god that there are kind people in this world! It's nice to have eyes in the area where I used to live and where Bubba went missing.
Will keep updated on how this goes.

Update:
I have went to see a couple of kitties in the last couple of week and none of them have turned out to be my Bubba.

I had an idea today, and would like some input. I noticed that our old place was in the classifieds finally up for rent. (She had to fix the roof and that took her a few months)

Would it be a good idea to send a note with Bubba's picture addressed to "Current Resident"?
Does that sound like a good idea or maybe I shouldn't? I don't see why it should be a problem? I mean, I'd like to know for my own sanity the new residents are aware of whose cat he might be if he shows back up there because I can't say I completely trust my old landlady to call me. Especially after she treated and talked to me when I told her we were planning on moving out.

Thoughts?

I haven't posted in a while, but have been following. I'm so sorry none of these have turned out to be Bubba. I'm thinking you may want to stop by the place after whom ever rents it moves in. A face to face may work out better then just sending a letter that could get lost or intercepted. Especially given your feelings about the owner. Just a thought. I'm still hoping you find him. I've heard stories about cats and dogs missing a lot longer. Take care.

Hi, alleria, thank you so much for sharing with us how you're doing. Tom's Dad has given you a very good idea that a "face to face" meet and greet with the new tenant might offer better results than a letter - - particularly if the new tenant is not fond of companions or normally interested in keeping an eye open for a lost companion. Only you can make the decision which is the best approach - - a "face to face" introduction or a letter with a picture of your precious Bubba. Whichever you decide, please let us know how things go.

I hope today is treating you kindly, alleria. Please know you and your precious Bubba are in my thoughts and prayers, and that I look forward to knowing how you're doing.
