I lost my best friend this past Friday. You can read more about that story and how I found my new buddy here:
http://lightning-strike.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=3015

Today was the big day when I got to meet Simba II. I knew I was going to like him but was nervous because I was afraid that when we met in the socializing room he would be afraid of me and run the other way. When his carrier was opened I was so happy to see him look at me and come over to me and let me pet him. He looked into my eyes and rubbed his head in my hand as I pet him. I immediately knew he was coming home with me.

After filling out and signing a bunch of forms and papers I got to put Simba in my own carrier and we walked out of the Humane Society together on the way to his new home.

When we got home I put his carrier in the middle of the living room floor and opened it up and he walked out and started investigating every inch of his new home, every once in a while coming over to me for a little attention and then continuing on. After his initial investigation we both then went to each closet and I opened the door so he could investigate inside the closet. We would get done with one and I would close the door and then we would move on together to the next one. I was pretty funny because he followed me to each closet door, knowing I was going to open the door for him to go inside and check it out.

He seemed to get settle in pretty quickly. Already eating his food and playing with all the toys I got for him. I just have to look at him in the eyes and he comes running over to me. Right now he is laying on the floor by me and finally getting some sleep smile.gif

He is such a nice sweet cat!

Here is Simba II, a one year old Apricot Tabby cat:

Simba was a beautiful cat, and your new Simba II, is absolutely adorable. I read your new story, and it sure sounds as if you are off to the start of a loving and new adventure together. You are truly honoring the memory and the relationship you had with Simba by bringing a new companion into your home to love and care for. I am so happy that it has worked out. I really loved the part about the closets. It sure sounds like you two were made for each other. Your story has made me smile today. Thank you for that.

I have a cat who looks almost exactly like Simba II, skinny physique and everything. He has 6 toes on his front paws, which he's very self-conscious about, but that's why we named him Mitts, for his barbeque mitts. My son and I were walking one night and he sort of popped out of the ground beside us like a leprachaun - kinda eerie. We asked around, could not find his owner, so we took him in and now he thinks he's 10-feet-tall and bullet-proof - he's always taking on our 2 other neutered males, 17 lb. cats. Silly boy. When I cry, for whatever reason, which I've done a lot lately, he comes over and pats my face with his mitts. Yours looks like he's brimming over with character.

He won't ever take the place of Simba I, but then you never expected him to, which is good. I got another cat shortly after I lost my old Heidi cat, and it's never diminished in any way my love for her. She taught me how to love a cat, and for that I'll be forever grateful. Saving a cat from an uncertain future is an honor to Simba I.

Congratulations and take care - Barbara

I just found the New Beginnings section after reading another of your posts and it made my night to see the photo of Simba II. He is very handsome. It's amazing how the timing worked out on the two of you finding each other. Thank you for sharing this!

Oh happy news! Welcome to Simba II - what a way to honor the original Simba. I loved how you described the homecoming.

Your story helps me get ready to continue my cat's legacy too...I am looking at the rescue websites in my area already...with a little trepidation, but Simba II confirms it!

Simba II is a great cat. He is well mannered and very friendly. I actually found him on PetFinder.com, a great site where you can do searches for animals in need of a home in your area. Simba II wasn't exactly in my area but I knew it would be worth the 25 mile drive to go get my new buddy smile.gif

He is pretty much tuckered out today and sleeping most of the day. He did alot of investigating (his new home) last night plus we both stayed up to about 3 A.M. playing with his new toys.

As you can see, he is not afraid of the camera either smile.gif

He is adorable! And looks settled in.

Can I ask a question? How did he take to your home (did you clean well beforehand)? Did Simba II mind the scent of Simba?

I was out on petfinder.com tonight too...I have two cats who are tugging at my heart tonight.

Keeping my house very clean is something I always done so I did clean the house very well the night before and I bought a new litter box, food and water bowls, toys, etc... I just didn't want Simba II to come to a new dirty home with used stuff smile.gif Plus Simba I's favorite toys will be going into his little ash can with him when I get that back.

I'm not sure if he scented Simba I, but I am sure there is still something around to let him know another cat was here. Every once in a while he stops in his tracks and sniffs a part of the carpet and then moves on. Doesn't seem to phase him any.

One thing I noticed right away was that when he wanted to hide for a few minutes, he went right into my bedroom closet right in the exact same spot where Simba I used to lay during his last few weeks. I kept the sliding door open part way so Simba I could get in and out and never closed it before bringing Simba II home. Probably just a coincidence.

Let me know if you have any other questions about bringing a new cat home. I will tell you that I do not feel guilty. Yes, I still get teary eyed thinking about my old buddy though sad.gif

Thanks that was helpful. I'll clean really well too - but there are some areas that seem so full of Cleo still (in spirit and in fur). I am doing OK, but still tear up at odd things. I was wondering about the "guilt" too. But, I know I really want a new buddy already. Cleo taught me how to love and live with a cat well.

I am glad Simba II is adjusting well. That is odd about the closet...maybe Simba I left a note that it was safe in there! Have fun.

I'm glad that things are going so well for you and Simba II. I have a feeling that unexplainable powers were at work(good ones) that brought you two together. Simba II is a beautiful fella. You can see it in his eyes, that he is special. And, Rit, I'm glad you're doing ok, and thinking about bringing a new 1 or 2 furbabies into your heart and home. I still tear up thinking about our Scooter, and today is one of those days. I would bring another cat into the home, but we still have 3 and they are still grieving I think. My middle cat, has been extremely protective? of me and is more cuddly than usual. I'm not complaining a bit, I love him cuddling by me, it gives me comfort. Maybe that's why he's doing that, or he's laying at my feet like a dog would. The reason I heasitate to bring a new furbaby home, is that I'm not that young, nor old, middle aged, but don't feel like I'm in the best of health. I want to be here to care for my babies. But, I know that there are no guarantee's how long we are here on this earth, no matter how old we are. I just miss my Scooter as I know you miss your beloved pets. My best wishes to both of you. I know Simba II was sent to you for a reason, like I said before, I can see it in his eyes.

One thing I didn't mention yet was that I also gained a new friendship with Simba II's foster caregivers. They are a very nice couple that does volunteer work for the Humane Society and take in cats to help them find permanent homes. People like that only have good hearts. They said they would have adopted Simba themselves but already have 5 of their own cats. He will have a good home with me and have the run of the house as the only cat.

I been emailing them everyday letting them know how Simba is settling in and sharing the pictures I took. They are very happy that they helped Simba get a great home.

They told me that they wish they could "clone" me biggrin.gif

Thank you Simba II's daddy for making me smile today, it had been a rough day until I read your new post. Again Thank you for the smile biggrin.gif I'm really glad that you formed a new friendship with Simba II's foster family. It's always nice to meet new people who you know love their animals with all their heart.

Just wanted to post a couple more pictures of my new buddy. We have become so close so fast. I took him to my Vet to get his rabies vaccine the other day and he never took his eyes off of me the whole time. The Vet told me it is probably because he's been through so much and was worried I was going to leave him there like his past owner (before the foster caregivers) did. I kept looking at him saying "don't worry buddy, you're coming back home with me."

Simba II is absolutely beautiful, as was Simba I. You two are a match for sure. He has been blessed to have found a new daddy like you to care and love him. I wish you so much happiness in your new relationship with Simba II. (I went to the local animal shelter today) just to look. So many kitties need homes, but I"m just not ready yet. I might go and volunteer to just give love and attention to them. There were so many there, to love.

I didn't think I would be ready for another cat so fast myself. Until I seen Simba II. I was so amazed how I found him like I did. What a great idea to volunteer to help the animals get the attention they need. You never know, maybe during your volunteer work, you might stumble onto your new best friend smile.gif

It's been 4 weeks since we put Scooter to rest. We still have our 3 other cats, but the house is earily quiet. The other 3 cats seem to be getting "used" to the idea that Scooter is not coming home, but there is a definite void in our home.

I have been going to the animal shelter. Four times this week, yes four times.
My husband tried me on my cell phone and finally reached me. I told him I was just on my way home, and he said I figured you were at the shelter again.

So many of the cats there seem to have that upper respiratory virus that spreads so quickly. I make sure I wash my hands before I go where the well ones are, though, the sick and well don't seem to be segregated.

Some kitties are too young to be adopted yet. They have to be a certain weight before they can be neutered before they can be adopted out. But before they can be neutered they have to be free from the upper respiratory virus.

I have filled out an application to be a volunteer for cats there, and already know most of the cats names there. One older cat that is 13, is just pulling at my heart.
He is so tall, his legs are at least 12-15 inches long before his shoulders. His name is Mookie. They said he does not like affection. Well, not from what I experienced. I opened his cage with their permission, and we just had a love fest. There is somthing in his eyes that just gets to me. I find it so hard to leave him. They say he also does not get along with other cats, so my problem would be my 3 younger cats at home. I figure I'll go to the shelter, and just love him as much as I can there.

There's another little guy, they have named Marcel. He's a young spitfire of a little one, and we get along great. I brought my husband (whom I have nicknames Dr Doolittle), because he's a natural with animals. I had hopes that he would take to Marcel like I have, but I don't think he's ready to bring another little one home yet.

I am wondering if we should yet also, as I need a total knee replacement. I've yet to see the Dr till the end of August, and I don't know what will happen from there.
So, probably the wise thing, is to continue doing what I am doing, by going to the shelter and just love, love, loving the kitties and cats there,, until the time is right.

It sure looks like Simba II has settled in, and I am really happy for you and your family that it has turned out so well. And, again, he sure is a handsom fella.

Thanks for the new pictures of Simba II. He looks very settled in. I think he and Marcel would get along, because, like Simba II, Marcel likes to look at TV too. He stand up on his hind legs with his little paws up on the screen. I'll try to capture a picture of him. He was just sitting on my shoulder as I was typing this. He is growing so fast, and fitting in well with the other cats. Gabbie is still questionable, but, even when we walk past "her" space, she carries on. I guess it's a female thing. Anyway, thanks for sharing the great pictures.

Simba II likes to put his paws on the screen too... I think it is because he is trying to play with the people on TV though. I should put in a video of Nascar and see if he tries to get the "little cars" racing accross the screen biggrin.gif
