QUOTE (Brutus @ Dec 29 2009, 12:20 PM) *
Margi...Brutus too loved to fish...his favorite thing in the world, he'd rather fish than eat even. He would wade in the water to his chest/neck and look for minnows/small fish...when he spotted one...boom...jump right on it...he too never caught one. He would also dive down into the water and pick up rocks. When he was young, he could go in 5-6ft water. I would throw a rock and he would watch were it would fall...swim out and go under...totally under...he could hold his breath for at least 30 seconds and he usually could find that particular rock and he would bring it up. As he got older, he couldn't do that anymore but he would still hold his breath and pick things up from the bottom...labs are wonderful!...especially black ones wink.gif

Hello, everybody - I came across this site two days ago, on Monday evening. Earlier in the day, we had to take our 19-year-old cat, Taffy, on that final trip to the vet. I felt - and feel - the way all of you do: ripped apart. Gradually, the happier memories begin to return, but I expect to grieve for a while.

Rest assured, your stories resonate with me. Best wishes, Cricket

Hi Cricket...so sorry about Taffy...your screen name "cricket"...we had a cat who passed away at 21, his name was cricket..lol. He used to love to eat crickets so that's how he got his name.

Sending prayers for you and your furangel Taffy,

Thanks, Brutus' mom. I picked the name "Cricket" in memory of our twenty-year-old male, Taffy's companion, who made that final trip in August. We buried him in the back yard. Knowing Taffy was ailing - she was down to 5 1/2 lbs. - I had my husband dig another grave, next to him, last summer before the ground froze. But the Twin Cities got snow over Xmas, which changed to sleet - and now we can't find it! So next spring, we'll have a little ceremony and bury her ashes there.

It sounds like the name "Cricket" contributes to longevity! Although, many years ago, we adopted a Birman kitten and gave her that name. She died after a few months of FIP; we liked the name, so we recycled it.

Thank you for your comment....

Thank you, janika. Your netname - along with the names Tasha and Noushka - makes me think of Northern Europe. (My husband is Latvian.) Tasha and Noushka must have been wonderful companions for you....

I have so so many of my little Puck, from the beginning, right until the end.
The first time I saw him- his momma had hidden them all in a landscape barrel behind our garage. this was when they were just teeny- no eyes, no ears.
The time momma brought them to our house to have dinner. He reminded me of a little baby monkey the way his little pointy face looked peeking out of our quince bush.
When I realized that my little skunk had learned to play fetch.
The way he was to the orphaned kittens our neighbor brought us. It earned him the joking nickname of Unclemotherbrotherauntie Puck
the way when he wanted picked up, he would sit up on his hind legs and reach for me like a little kid.
Every night when he slept on my chest, head under my chin, his legs around my neck.
His teeny little girly mew.
The week between christmas and new year where I was home, and we just hung out in my comfy leather chair and cuddled all day.
There were so many great times with my baby. Thank you Puck for sharing yourself with me.

Pucks Mom--

He is so so sweet! What an angelic face--you were indeed lucky!

I'm so glad that you are able to recall the happy times so quickly--many of us can't for awhile, we're so overcome with grief.

A few things about the (living) Ladywolf. One time she had a friend named Jake, a golden lab, whom she loved to torment. I was out hiking and so were Jake and his dad. Lady caught sight of Jake far below us in a wash, but he didn't catch on that she was there. So she slunk up a hill on her belly, and when he was right below her, she hurled herself off the hill and landed right on top of him! A Wolf with a grand sense of humor!

She "squeaks" when I come home after leaving her at someone else's house for the day who has dogs (she is never alone.) I can't describe the squeaking./whistling--it's a truly bizarre sound. She only howls when I'm not with her, so I've never seen or heard it for myself--my caretaking friends are privvie to it instead.

She's languid and sensuous and more like a lover than a dog/wolf...

I'll miss her so when that time comes--but that's not today!

Hugs--Margi

As I was writing that, I realized that with Puck, there had never ever been less than a great moment. He was pure joy. It feels like I would do him an injustice if I couldn't recognize the joy that he gave me, even though his loss has left a hole in my soul. He was with me 3 years, 6 months, and 29 days, and while not all of them were good days, every moment with him was wonderful.

Margi- Your Ladywolf sounds like a girl after my own heart! I gotta say that mischief is the spice of life. Bless her heart.

My Smiling girls xx
I was sitting trying to think of what to tell you all about my Angels and the 'good times', but Pucksmom, you are so right, I'm sitting here with a big smile on my face recalling that yes they both brought so much joy to us from the minute we first saw them. So what a good idea this topic is, it's making us think of the 'Happy and Good Times' and how blessed we are to have these wonderful soulmates to share our lives with.
Cricket, I suppose you would say that England is Northern Europe, it certainly feels like it with all the snow we've had lately. My Angel girls , Samoyeds, are a breed that originate in Siberia so we wanted to give them Russian names, they suited them so well. They sure were the best companions I could ever have wished for.

Thinking of you all, keep posting these stories that make us 'smile' again.

Love Jan and my Angels Tasha and Noushka x

It's so hard to pick what to write, every second with my Elton was a good time. As my mom would say, he was my soul mate. I only had 5 years with him, but in that short time he made both my husband and my life better. Of all the memories though, what I will hold onto the most is the way he could erase a bad day just by saying hello. I would walk in the door and there he was, wagging his entire back half of his body - so excited to see me. And just like that - all was right in the world. I know that he is watching over us and will be forever in our hearts.

My 17 1/2 year old cat George would sit on my lap and roll on his side conforming his bodin into the inside of my elbow and lay there like a baby partly on his back. He would then take his paw and gently caress my face while his purr shook the house. It was like he was petting me back. I absolutely loved when he did that. I'll miss it terribly.

My buddy Rex had a watch that I never did find but at 8:30 pm on the dot he would go in the kitchen and stand in front of the fridge ready for his snack. When I got it for him no matter what it was he always did this happy jumping kinda dance. I do not know why he went to the fridge as his snacks were not kept there, but he even taught the cat to do the same thing at the same time. I find it so hard at this time to not hear him get up walk past me and head to the kitchen. Rex was really smart but, our backdoor opens in to the yard,we have a gate about 5-6 feet from the door and for some reason when he was ready to come in from outside he would go and stand facing that stupid gate and bark until we let him in laugh.gif . He could tell time but could not find the door? rolleyes.gif.
It feels good to talk about happy times with him. I miss you so much buddy. I wish so much that I could give you one more snack one more hug and see you at that gate when I open the door.

Love you goofy boy!!

Love,
Your Momma

The best memory I have of my dear departed cat Holly is no matter how long the couch was or how big the bed was, she would always snuggle up right next to me. She used to sleep right in the crook of my arm at night, or on the cold nights she would get under the blankets with me and sleep next to my stomach.

She also had her own blanket on the couch, and no one else was allowed to sit there. If her blanket wasn't placed just so, she would sit in front of the couch, stare at it and wait for me to fix it for her.

I miss you my fuzzy little daughter.

I have so many fond memories of Winston... he was very much my wife's dog but he was also a family dog.

If I was sitting at my desk he would come sit next to me and put a paw on my leg to get my attention... that was my queue to back away from my desk so he could climb into my lap. He'd sit there with his chest and front legs in my lap and his back legs on the floor so he could get some affection. He would also actually put his head on your shoulder and hug you.

I really miss him.

Hi doggielove here, I have some cute memories of Tyson. I find myself thinking about him every hour on the hour. So I thought of some cute memories. I remember when he was a puppy he used to go down the kiddie slide at the park. He would climb the few steps and go down. We even have video of it somewhere in the basement. He didn't like the water but he LOVED snow and used to roll in it. Because he was all black when he came in the house covered in snow all you could see was his eyes. When our cat was a kitten he would stare at her kind of funny with his head tilted to the side while she hung upside down from her scratching post. That was funny.. Tyson we miss all the cute things you used to do!! mommy and daddy.

I thought I'd share a memory of my cat Fritz, who left this world on January 14th, 2011, after a very sudden illness struck.

When Fritz came into my life he was not much more than a kitten...a pre-teen who was bursting with energy and life. He belonged to a couple who lived downstairs from me, and when Fritz first met myself and my son, I had promised to take care of him for the summer, as his owners were going away for two months. The plan had been for Fritz to remain in his downstairs apartment, and I would drop by a couple of times a day to feed him, clean his litter box, and reassure him that he hadn't been abandoned. That plan didn't last for very long however, as the first day I went down to check on him, he began YOWLING at the top of his lungs as soon as I left. My heart went out to him, as I'm sure he didn't understand why he was all alone. His cries were heartbreaking to hear, so it wasn't long before I headed back downstairs, scooped him up in my arms, and brought him to my apartment.

Almost immediately Fritz switched gears and entered happiness overload. He quite literally charged through the apartment, crashing into walls, bouncing off furniture in his excitement. My two resident kitties and my one canine family member most certainly must have thought I'd gone mad, having invited this insane little creature into the apartment. They cowered in fear or fled the room, seeking solace somewhere - anywhere - as Fritz stormed the premises. He chased the other cats, leapt up and down around the dog, all the while still bouncing off of anything immobile. Plants toppled and crashed in his wake; the kitchen table was swept clean in one fell swoop as the furry grey tornado whirled, touched down, and then surged yet again down hallways, crashing into one room after another. Finally I'd had enough, and my temporary pangs of sympathy quickly dissipated as I watched anything that wasn't tied down succumb to this tiny feline's antics....and at last, after managing to snag him as he was preparing for yet another electifying assault, I unceremoniously escorted him back to his own apartment.

The YOWLING, of course, began even before I got the key in the door to lock it shut. I tried to ignore the sounds, scurrying back up to my own home and shutting the door in the hopes of drowning out his agonizing pleas, then turning on the television and trying to focus my attention there. But I must have underestimated the talents of all creatures feline; for they have a way of getting to you with their cries, even if you can no longer physically hear them. As I sat staring at the tv, I found that I heard not a word coming from the program I was intent on using as a shield; no, those YOWLS of his echoed within me, as if they'd somehow penetrated the deepest recesses of my brain and remained there, a tape recorded cry with a never-ending loop. In the end I had to give in to the feelings of guilt and pity, and so I headed back downstairs again, unlocked the neighbours' door, scooped Fritz up into my arms, and brought him back upstairs with me once more, where he was to remain for the rest of the two months. And as I climbed the stairs with him, I recall that inner voice of mine speaking loudly and clearly to me. The plants could be replaced. The dog would learn to live with him. The cats would get used to him, maybe even teach him some indoor feline manners. The furniture would survive...and if not, it too could be replaced. All of it was so unimportant, compared to that of a small cat - only half-grown and not understanding what was happening - deserving to be loved and comforted. And I swear that on some level Fritz knew, because as I carried him with me to my apartment....a place that would ultimately, several months and a twist of fate later become his permanent home...his front paws reached out and he wrapped them firmly around my neck, and I heard for the first time what was to become his trademark: a deep, almost guttoral 'rumblepurr' of contentment and love. My little soulmate had arrived.

My beautiful, lovable Bip, a 90 lb American Bulldog, has always been so docile and sweet with me but proved to be aggressive with other dogs and others who came on to our property. I got him when he was about two years old, nursed him successfully thru heartworm, a beaver attack (he won, but ended up with 26 stitches and a few days in the hospital), and numerous bouts with hip displaysia and knee problems. He would always get very excited when I got home from work because we would walk across the field to my mom's house which was a couple of acres away. One time, I can't remember what he did that made me mad, but I left him in the house when I got home and went over to check on my mom as usual. When I got back home, he had thrashed my couch cushions, leaving shreds of cotton stuffing and rosy patterned fabric all over the living room. After the initial shock, I laughed so hard and snapped a picture of him sitting in the middle of it all with his ears down and him looking sheepish. It made me ask myself just who taught who a lesson here??? I love him with all my heart; he's about 12 and in the hospital, with some kind of neurological problem that we haven't figured out yet. He can't walk anymore, so we're having to help him along with a sling I loop around his back end (he can still use his front legs). I'm praying for help in making the right decision for him.

Goliath love the pic!

My Jasmine would jump on the bed everytime I would be putting fresh sheets on! I would have to chase her around to get the sheets and blankets on. Then she would lay on the pillows when it was all made. I think she had to get her scent on the bed first. LOL
