My Poor Kitty

My poor little kitty (I still call her a kitty, even though she's over 14 years old) has a tumor under her tongue that ulcerated. I didn't notice it until it was really bad off, and now she's going for surgery today. I feel so helpless. She's my little baby, and I don't know what I'll do if I lose her. I've had her since I was a little girl and she's always been there for me. Now I can only be there for her.
They think it might be cancer, so they're doing a biopsy and we'll know in two to three weeks. I just hope she's ok. Has anyone else had this happen? Any advise on what I can do to help her? I normally give her dry cat food, but since her tongue is so bad I've given my baby nothing but Fancy feast! She likes it a lot. I just don't know what to do. I know that if it is cancer, I'll have to put her to sleep at some point. I just don't want to...it's so hard. Someone told me I could just get a new cat. But I couldn't! It'd be like saying you can get a new sister if this one dies. She's family.
