Hi, I am a new poster. My fur babies name is Duncan and He has been my companion for a wonderful 19 years. Just a few weeks ago I was told he had Chronic Kidney Disease after lab work being done. We changed food which helps slightly but his numbers are still up. The vet sent me home with sub q fluids which have been a nightmare. My cat is so sweet and docile but he turned feral when my sister and I attempted this. I got bit, she got stuck by the needle. We attempted over several days and this poor guy just cried every time. Now he hides from me every day in the morning for about half the day. I am leery of giving him the sub q fluids at any rate because his red blood cell counts were incredibly wonky.
I have an appointment with the vet next Friday and I have elicited help from my brother to come with me. I have to tell the vet other than specially food and his blood pressure meds I won't be doing any other treatments. I can't afford to pay her to do the sub q and I obviously am not qualified to handle it myself.
The decision is two fold. One I simply cannot afford it and two I can't bring myself to have my baby be scared of me and hiding and crying about this fluid injection.
My heart is completely breaking right now. To give you some back ground on me, I have Crohn's disease and this stress is not good for me either. But this little kitty would comfort me through the worst of my symptoms when I was sick. How can I say goodbye to him?

Duncan's Mommy,

I'm so very sorry to hear about sweet Duncan's diagnosis.

I so empathize with the difficulty in giving the fluids and in Duncan's fear of it ! That sounds like a nightmare--for both of you--in itself. sad.gif I hope you will be at peace with deciding not to do the fluids. I'm almost positive I would not be able to do it, and I AM positive that my cat would hide from me (just a couple of weeks ago I had to give eardrops twice a day and THAT was almost impossible for both me and him! It created an atmosphere of fear!). You are wonderful to have tried and to also be so caring about Duncan's feelings.

I am glad your brother will be going to Friday's appointment with you and Duncan.

I'm glad you found this site. Please keep us posted, as often as you can, about how you and Duncan are doing. If you feel up to it, maybe you could post a picture of him.

Wow--19 years old. Did you adopt him as a kitten? He is a very lucky cat to have you as his Mom!!

Be in touch. Sending prayers your way,
Kathy

Hi, Duncan's Mom, please permit me to add my sincerest condolences on the medical diagnosis of your precious Duncan. From first hand experience with my beloved companions who are now with the angels I can so relate to your feelings about not looking forward to not having the sweet precious physical presence of your precious Duncan. Please let me try to reassure you that what you are feeling is very normal Anticipatory Grief, which is a horror roller coast ride of many different emotions all of its own.

You are so wise to stop the sub q fluid injections for both your precious Duncan and you. Your focus needs to be on what enhances the quality of life for your precious Duncan, and it is obvious from what you share with us that forcing the injection of sub q fluids does not provide this for either of you. The sub q fluids will not change the course of the Chronic Kidney Disease, so you are not depriving your precious Duncan of any treatment that will restore his health to a better quailty of life.

As a senior citizen I have learned throughout my life that there is no "ideal time" for us to endure the very painful journey of adjusting to the physical absence of our beloved companion. There is no way we can ever "prepare" ourselves for that moment in time when we must put aside or own wants and needs to give our companion the last gift of enduring selfless love we can give to them on this side of eternity: to release them from their frail, failing, painful physical body that provides them a peaceful transition journey home to the angels. One of the many things you need to remember is that you are not alone - - you are among friends here who truly do understand what you are going through and we are here for you for as long and as often as you need us.

Duncan's Mom, thank you so very much for honoring us in sharing your precious Duncan with us. Please know your precious Duncan and you are in my thoughts and prayers, and please let us know how you both are doing - - and how things go this Friday with the consult with your veterinary care provider.

Peace and blessings,
moon_beam

[attachment=6875:image.jpg]Thank you so much. I was so grateful to find a site with people who get me! smile.gif I have a very deep attachment to my baby and not everyone gets that.
Little girls mom - yes, I got him as a kitten. My sister actually adopted his brother who passed a few years ago.
Here is my most current photo.
I have been thru what feels like stages of grief already and I am sure I will go thru them all again later. Right now he is alert, eating and happy, so at least I have time.

Hi, Duncan's Mom, thank you so much for sharing with us how your precious Duncan and you are doing, and this wonderful picture of your precious boy. He is so handsome, and as our forum friend Kathy has already noted, he truly knows he is loved from the expression on his face. It sounds from what you share with us that he is still enjoying a good quality of life, and I know both you and your precious Duncan are cherishing every moment of every hour of every day you have together.

I hope today is treating your precious Duncan and you kindly. Please know you both are in my thoughts and prayers, and please let us know how you're doing.

Peace and blessings,
moon_beam

Just a follow up. Took my baby to the vet today and she was totally fine with me not giving him the sub Q. She said the treatment should not adversely affect his quality of life. She even though brining him in a few times a week would be a stress..so we will continue with me trying to keeping him hydrated and feeding the low protein low phosphorous food. She said his phosphorous levels are actually normal right now which to her indicated he isn't that far along in the CKD. And he gained some weight! Yeah!
Thank you for all the kindness and support!

Hi, Duncan's Mom, thank you so very much for sharing with us the wonderful news about his check up yesterday. I'm so glad your veterinary care provider is supportive of you in not giving your precious Duncan the sub q injections at home confirming that not giving him the injections will not have an adverse effect on his quality of life - - (quite evidently from what you share with us not giving him the injections has greatly IMPROVED his, and your, quality of life).

It sounds like he is holding his own at this time, and this is very good news indeed. There will be good days when your heart will soar seeing him doing so well, and there will be not so good days when your heart will ache wondering if the time has come to release your precious Duncan's phyiscal body from this earthly realm. Your veterinary care provider will be your guide in determining your precious Duncan's quality of life. Please know we are here for you, with you, and beside you through every step of your and your precious Duncan's journey.

I hope today is treating you and your precious Duncan kindly, please know you and your precious Duncan are in my thoughts and prayers, and please let us know how you both are doing.

Peace and blessings,
moon_beam
