Hello my baby rufus

You're not really a baby, cuz you are a black lab-Newfie. Do you know how much mommie loves you? I'm afraid maybe you don't know that for sure. No, you're not Gretta - and you aren't supposed to be. You are you, the darling curly -coated black dog whom people stop on the street EVERY time we walk and tell you what a great dog you are. And it's true. You are. You know how broken my heart was after Gretta went to the Promised Land. My arms felt so empty with nobody to hug. The house felt very empty and lonely. Then I saw you picture on Second Chance. I though you were a little young (since it wouldn't be that long until I retire), but you beautiful eyes captured my heart. It was like you were looking right out of the picture at me. I knew you were sending me a message. So I opened my door and we were a pair.

Then I went to India for a month and your wonderful foster mom LE opened her door and you got to go back an live in the place you'd been for two years. I cried and cried - thinking how little I had to offer you in the way of a "dog's" life. Big apartment, no yard, many, many walks, a wonderful dog bed, more walks, you alone all day and - being a boy - you reacted totally differently to my attempts to snuggle.

I seriously considered letting you live the life you had just come from: big house, acreage, free rein to run and play, doggie and kittie companions, a mom and dad who really, truly loved you. Was I really being fair to you? Thank goodness my Lightning Strike friends here convinced me to go with my true inner heart and we became a true family that day. My heart totally opened to you. No, you don't stand up on the couch and wait for me to come home at night - but you're you!! You've found the love seat and you love to nap there. Just in the last day or two you've come up on the loveseat while I am sitting on it and we sit there together.

You're about to take a pretty long vacation to your Wisconsin home. Your Aunt Bobbie is going to have a huge operation and mommie is going there to help her. You are a lucky dog to have two moms who love you so much. I love you Ruf-a-doo. I really do. YOu're a piece of my heart and I know I'm a piece of yours. You're a pillar of strength now when I need it. Thank you for not biting me when I put your dog boots and sweatshirt on to t ake walks in the -11 weather. You do such a gentle job of just reminding me that you DO have teeth but you'd never use them on me.

I could write forever and still not be able to thank you for everything you've done for me. You're a big giant pillar of loving strength. (And you sure look a lot better now that that huge camel hump has come off your shoulder and all your har has grown back in.) Remember those two weeks when you had a bald-spot heart on your back (you couldn't see it, but I sang about it to you all the time).

Rufie, my love, all we can do is put one foot in front of the other and keep going and keep loving. And you are the perfect dog for that.

I love you, Rufus. I really, truly do.

Your mommie
