Hi all I've just recently lost my beautiful dog of 14 years. Here's a poem I wrote a short time after. It seemed to help me. I've never written any thing before, so really surprised myself I was sitting down writing a poem.

Nose PrintsOn The Window

Nose prints on the window,
Paw prints on the floor,
A water dish lies empty,
A leash that walks no more,
Imprints upon a cushion,
Claw marks on the door,
Hairs upon the living room mat,
From where you lay before.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In life you brought great joy to me,
I was there when you were born,
I seen you take your first breath,
On that cold spring morn,
I thought you well, I watched you grow,
From a pup into a dog,
For long walks we would go through rain, snow and fog,
A friend to me you became, so faithful and so true,
I was always happiest when I was close to you,
Inseparable we became,
I loved you every day,
Fond memories of summers past,
When you ran amongst the hay.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14 years they pass so quick,
Your life it slips away,
Your eyes grew dim, your body weak,
On that final day,
I lay with you upon that mat,
On the livingroom floor,
Rubbed your belly stroked your head,
Dropped tears upon your nose,
You try to hide your pain from me,
I see it in your eyes,
I dread to think what life will be,
Without you by my side.
For on this day I must be strong,
A choice I make for you,
Through tear filled eyes and breaking heart,
I know what I must do.

At the final moment,
I hugged you oh so tight,
I told you how much I loved you,
Just like that long last night,
And as you slipped away from me,
I held you by your chin,
I rubbed your ears and kissed your nose,
And said we’ll meet again,
Your body now is lifeless, your pain it’s gone away,
My life it felt so empty, when I lost you on that day.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shadows in the corner
A Welcome home no more,
Silence in the kitchen,
No tapping on the door,
This house it seems so empty,
From the life it had before,
Nose prints on the window,
Paw prints on the floor.

Dear gerryh2002,

I am so sorry for the loss of your precious dog. Your poem was beautiful, words that are so true. It brought tears to my eyes. I lost my doggie five years ago next month. He was 14 years old too. I have written poems too, I find that it helps.

Again I am so sorry for your loss.......God Bless.

O M G.

Dear Gerry, I am so overcome by the raw emotions evoked by your poem that I cannot even compose myself enough to write a coherent thought tonight. sad.gif

I will write tomorrow. In the meantime please accept my heartfelt sympathies on the loss of your precious dog!!

Prayers heading your way,

Kathy

Hi Gerry,

I am going to save the poem in my "grief" folder. I don't think I've ever read anything so powerful !!

How are you doing? Please know that you will be fully reunited with your sweet dog eventually. And, in the meantime, s/he is still right with you. S/he is in a blissful realm where the limitations of time and space don't exist. wub.gif

I hope you check back in and let us know how you are doing. Do you have supportive friends/family? Other pets to hang on to? And if and when you wish, I'd love to hear more about your precious dog---and pictures, if you're up to it.

We are here for you.

Sending prayers of healing your way,

Kathy

Thanks for your comments, i lost my 2 dogs in the past 6 weeks sandy 15 a cairn terrier that strayed into us all those years ago. and her daughter uggie 14 a mixed breed (sandy was pregnant when she arrived). When we lost sandy we had uggie to fall back on but now with the two girls gone life is so quite and our routines gone. I'm feeling much better about the decision now for uggie 1 week after and I feel it was right. Uggie was diagnosed with liver cancer in November 2013. so her living happy and healthy this long amazed the vets.i was feeding natural a diet adding supplements of all kinds to slow the tumors progress and give her the best quality of life possible, which she had until the last week before her passing. the Tumor had become too much for her it had grown to the size of a football and was squashing her lungs and organs. Breathing was difficult she stoped eating and then stoped drinking. We hoped she would pass in her sleep on her mat in the living room. But she was always stubborn and never wanted to give up. The day we let her go We thought she would be dieing then she would hop up snd head out for a pee and surprise us. So we had to decide for her. Her mam had kidney failure we only found out 3 days before we made the decision for her. We kept putting her symptoms down to old age.
The poem came about the next day when, I came home to an empty house for the first time in 15 years, and the first thing I seen was her nose prints in the window, and when I opened the door her paw prints on the floor and the rest just flowed after that. I have never written anything before and found it strange that I was looking for paper and pen to write this down. But it really helped.
Sandy and uggie have lived in my life and shaped me over 15 years I have given them special places in the garden side by side their chapter is over and I will never forget them.
in the past 2 days I have being looking at shelter dogs online and I will choose 2 and change their lives as I'm sure they will mine and a new chapter begins.
Circle of life and all that☺
Life is too short to dwell on old memories when I can change another dogs life with love.

Gerry,

You are awesome to be selecting 2 needy, LUCKY dogs wub.gif to adopt!! Sandy and Uggie are very proud of you. wub.gif In my opinion, there is no better gift in their honor.

I can't say enough about the poem. Just speechless. I've been able to read it only once but will read again eventually. Have you shared it with many others?

Keep in touch.

Blessings,

Kathy

No I haven't shared it anywhere only here, I'm not a poetic type of person you see.

Hi, gerry, please permit me to add my sincerest sympathies in the physical losses of your beloved Sandy and Uggie. Losing a companion is never easy regardless of the circumstances or how long we are blessed with the privilege of their company. Losing two companions in a short period of time can intensify the grief.

Thank you so much for sharing with us the beautiful poem you wrote in loving tribute to your beloved Uggie. Your words are so poignant - - anyone reading it who knows the love bond with a beloved companion knows the depth of your love for Uggie and the deep sadness in your heart.

It is wonderful you feel you can embrace another pair of companions into your heart and home. There is no doubt that your beloved Sandy and Uggie are guding your path to that moment in time when you will see the precious souls who are patiently waiting just for you to bring them to their Forever Home.

Thank you so much for honoring us in sharing your beloved Sandy and Uggie with us, Gerry. Perhaps sometime you will feel up to sharing a picture of them with us but only when / if you want to. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers, and please let us know how you're doing.

Peace and blessings,
moon_beam

Dear Gerryh2002

This poem is so beautiful, it really touched my heart. I could feel all the love your angel dog and you feel for each other.
Thanks so much for sharing it, at this time when it has been one week since the passing of my dear Luna.

I hope your heart heals, and you find comfort in all the beautiful memories you both shared.

I am so sorry for your loss... I am new here. I had to put my 8 yr old calico to sleep on Jan 26 for liver and spleen cancer. My eldest and only remaining cat was almost 21, he gave up and stopped eating the day before we let her go. We had to put him to sleep 4 days later on the 30th.

Your poem really resonated with me, and i was able to release some of the pain via tears. Thank you so much for sharing.
