Unexpectedly, our cat Strider died last night. He had just gotten a clean bill of health from our vet yesterday afternoon. He came home, played, ate, did normal Strider things... my husband and I went to find him before bed and found him dead in the litterbox.

We are devastated. We can't wrap our minds around how our healthy 6 year old black cat is dead. And I can't cope with the fact that he died in his litterbox, without us right there. We were HOME. How did we not hear him??????

The other cats are going to grieve terribly. Lancelot and Earl Grey were very close to him. They got to sniff his body before we took him to the vet, at least.

I don't... I have no words. I'm lost.

Hi, Kel, please permit me to offer you my sincerest sympathies in the physical loss of your beloved Strider. Losing a companion is never easy regardless of the circumstances or how long we are blessed with the privilege of their company. Losing a companion so suddenly and unexpectedly intensifies the grief.

Kel, even though you have traveled this road before does not make the grief adjustment journey "easier." Each physical loss of a beloved companion is unique because the relationship we have with each of our companions is uniquely individual. And I know all too well from first hand experience how your heart aches deeply - - not just as you endure the deep sorrow in your heart for your personal grief, but the additional pain your heart will bear seeing your precious Lancelot and Earl Grey grieve for their beloved companion and housemate.

None of us know the how and when our appointed time will come when we transition from this earthly journey. It is definitely a shock when our companion's time is so very unexpected and at such a very young age. I know when our hearts are entrenched in deep grief there really are no adequate words in any language that can soothe the seering pain of sorrow. Still, I hope the words I share with you will offer you some measure of comfort, support, encouragement, and hope as you, your husband, and your precious Lancelot and Earl Grey travel your grief adjustment journey.

Thank you so much for honoring us in sharing your beloved Strider with us, Kel. Please know you, your husband, and your precious Lancelot and Earl Grey are in my thoughts and prayers, and please let us know how you're doing.

Peace and blessings,
moon_beam

Kel, I am very sorry to hear about Strider's death. What a horrible shock! Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. It looks like it could have been a heart attack or something like it. Whatever it was it happened so quickly that he didn't have time to come to you for help. This is so devastating to lose a cat so unexpectedly and without any warning or symptoms. I can imagine how shaken you must be.

Hugs,
DannysMom

Oh Kel.

I am SO saddened to hear of the sudden passing of your precious Strider sad.gif Such a beautiful man cat. Please accept our deepest condolences, and know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers. I wish I had some eloquent words of wisdom like moon_beam and DannysMom, but I'm not very good with that. We are all here for you. God Bless.

Kel, I did some research and it looks like Strider could have had HCM (hyperthrophic cardiomyopathy). It is difficult to diagnose and can't be detected by listening to the heart, x-rays or blood work. So that may be while Strider had a clean bill of health he could have had a heart problem. Please see link below for the article.

Hi, all. Just sneaking in to let you know we're hanging in there. We're having a few issues with the other cats, though. It never rains...

Tues, Karma went to the vet for a checkup/x-rays since he had a cough here and there. (As in, once every 2-3-4 weeks, one-time episodes, lasting ~2 min, without any further distress.) Chest x-ray normal, but try a humidifier is the advice. Wed, he was fine. Thu, he was very off. Not active, not really interested in eating. sad.gif Took him to our vet and he perked up. His exam was normal, they drew blood - but we wouldn't get results until the next AM. I was at work, so my husband did this. Karma got home, started acting more lethargic. So husband took him to the emergency vet where they can get bloodwork back quickly. All was normal. Karma perked up and acted like his usual self. Kidneys, liver, blood counts all normal. Sent out the pancreatitis test and a urinalysis. Karma got fluids and ate a little dry food there. Came home, ate a tiny bit more, then went to one of his beds and slept. When he got up to walk, he was limping heavily. He has a chronically dislocated hip, having come to us abused. It normally doesn't bother him, but we talked to the ER vet who said Karma really struggled with the blood draw and he might be sore from that. So we let Karma rest and saw how he was yesterday.

Yesterday, Karma was acting like himself, except not really eating. Ate a few bites of Friskies, a few licks of meat baby food. We gave him mirtazipine to stimulate his appetite but it didn't do a ton. I had to go to work, but throughout the day he was bright, somewhat less active than usual but out, on the sunroom enjoying the sun, and looking relatively normal. Our vet's been kind of dismissive with our worries, so we're frustrated there. When I got home from work, I gave him Cerenia in spite of our vet's advice not to since he didn't seem nauseated - but I know from my experience with a cat with lymphoma that a) it doesn't hurt and cool.gif sometimes nausea is subtle in cats. Shortly thereafter, he got in the litterbox and moved his bowels, straining to do so. He got out of the litterbox, vomited up the Cerenia and then went in another litterbox and moved his bowels again. It all seemed pretty firm, so I think he might have been constipated. He spent then next 15-20 minutes hopping in and out of the litter boxes, but then he settled. After that, he ate a little dry food. He played the tiniest of bits last night, and got on the bed and demanded snuggles, acting more like a normal Karma. Didn't do any more of the in-and-out of the litterbox thing.

Today, he's not interested in food but he's very bright. He got up and used his litterbox, peed without a problem so we're less concerned than last night with the in-and-out behavior. Our vet tech friend came over and helped us give him some fluids and helped us force feed him a bit. He tolerated it really well, no nausea/vomiting. We're going to keep that up today and see if we can kick start his appetite that way.

Now, of course, Willow girl is off her food. She's a sensitive soul, and she freaks out whenever the carrier's out, thinking she's going to the vet. It's possible she ate overnight. She's bright and acting fine, but didn't want breakfast and didn't want treats - but our vet tech came and she hates having guests. She's so shy. sad.gif So my inclination there is time, love and patience.

Please think happy thoughts for us. We're getting blown off by our vet, and I'm worried about Willow and Karma.

Kel, I am so sorry to hear that Karma is ill and Miss Willow is having issues as well. Poor Karma...have you tried some Laxatone, the hair ball remedy? If he is constipated that should help. If he's having a sensitive tummy as well you may want to try some Pepcid which is safe to give to cats according to my vet. Or try some boiled rice and boiled chicken, something easily digestible. That should help him too. If his bloodwork was fine it could just be stress, but I'm concerned about the cough. That could be a heart problem, so you may want to have him checked for that. Has he been shedding a lot? Then it could be hairballs and the Laxatone should help.

I think your presciption of time, love and patience should definitely work. smile.gif Cats do not like change, and your fur tribe has lost one of its members recently so there is bound to be some stress and grieving there. I will keep you and your fur kids in my thoughts and prayers.

Hugs,
DannysMom

Hi, Kel, thank you so much for sharing with us how your precious Karma and Willow are doing. Please know I share your concerns, and know that you and your husband are doing everything in your power to keep them healthy and happy. There is a paste called Nutri Cal that is high caloric and is used for cats who are ill, recovering from illness / surgery, or pregnant. This is something you might want to consider adding to your arsenal to help stimulate appetites. As with people constipation can interfere with the appetite and feeling perky. My precious Noah is now on a daily dose of Miralax prescribed by his veterinary care provider, and this has made a HUGE improvement in his solid waste elimination process. I am very sorry your primary veterinary care provider does not seem to be responding to your concerns as you would like. It is vitally important you have a veterinary care provider you feel you can trust.

Kel, I do hope today is treating you, your precious Lancelot, Karma, Willow, and your husband kindly. Please know you, your precious companions, and your husband are in my thoughts and prayers, and please let us know how each of you are doing.

Peace and blessings,

Thank you, moon_beam and Danny's Mom. It's always nice to know that the two of you are in this with me. We syringe fed Karma some A/D, one of the critical care diets. We're hoping to get a can into him today, but we'll do our best. He's keeping it down, so that's something. He's acting ok, so our plan is to support him this weekend and have an internal medicine specialist see him Monday -unless something changes, then we'll bring him to the ER.

Miss Willow just ate some treats! She won't eat her normal food yet, but just her eating treats is progress.

Thanks, all. We went to the ER tonight, and Willow checks out fine. We think it really is just stress, so we're to keep offering her food and see how she does. Her blood work was perfectly normal, as was her physical exam.

Karma's hip x-ray showed bad arthritis. He came to us with a dislocated hip, so that's not too surprising. So, pain meds, continued syringe feeding and an appetite stimulant and we'll see how he does. Progress! His blood work also checked out fine tonight.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. Please keep them coming - hopefully these two will start eating soon!

Hi, Kel, thank you so much for sharing with us how your precious Karma and Willow are doing. Eating treats IS an improvement, and hopefully you'll be able to start including some food with Willow's treats and then slowly decrease the treats as her appetite improves with her regular food. As you know chronic pain also has an effect on the rest of the body - - and spirit - - so hopefully adding pain meds and an appetite stimulant for your precious Karma will help him to get back his appetite. Please know your precious companions, along with you and your husband, are in my thoughts and prayers that your precious Karma and Willow will be restored to their good health. Please let us know how things go.

Kel, as always I do hope today is treating you, your precious Lancelot, Karma, Willow, Earl Grey, and your husband kindly. One again, please know you, your precious companions, and your husband are in my thoughts and prayers, and please let us know how each of you are doing.

Peace and blessings,

Thank you, moon_beam. We made more progress this morning. smile.gif I ended up syringing Willow a tiny bit of AD and water last night, in spite of the ER telling us not to. I felt she needed something in her stomach and she took it better than Karma does! She is such a sweet, cooperative girl. Hates the vet, but trusts us to do almost anything to her. Love her so. Gave Karma his pain med, syringe fed him once and let him rest. We all went to bed at our normal time and got up at our normal time, both things which hadn't been happening for the past couple days.

This morning, Lance was yelling to get out of the bedroom around 9:30, and Karma was up and ready to leave the bedroom too! That's an improvement, since most mornings when we got up at 10, he was still sound asleep in his bed. When we got up at noon (yeah, because I work 3p-11p, our sleep schedule is weird), Willow was waiting outside the bedroom to rush in and jump up on the bed to climb and love all over my husband. This is her usual morning routine, which again, she hadn't done since Thursday, maybe? I got up and gave Lancelot his "treats" (aka, phenobarb & prednisolone), and Willow ate a few Pill Pockets, which she wasn't doing yesterday. Karma was up on the back of the sofa, one of his favorite places - he hadn't gotten up there in a couple days, either.

Willow ended up eating her breakfast with some bonita tuna flake encouragement! This is such a big deal, as she hadn't actually eaten a meal since Friday afternoon. (Though, she might have been eating last night overnight, as she was acting hungry before bed but wouldn't eat when we were watching.) Karma hasn't eaten, but he did lick a little baby food. He ran out to the sunroom, though, when I opened it. I don't think I have seen him running for a couple days. I got his pain med and pepcid into him. My husband is off getting more tuna flakes and gourmet foods at the slightly-farther-away-than-Petco fancy pet store. wink.gif We'll offer him some foods when husband gets home, but if he doesn't eat them, I'll syringe him.

I feel like things are at least starting to normalize a little. Karma's not back to himself yet, but getting closer. Willow's almost normal again. smile.gif

Kel, thanks for letting us know how Karma and Willow are doing. It's really good news that Willow is eating again and almost back to normal. I hope Karma gets back to his normal self soon as well. It is so distressing when our fur kids get sick. I'm glad Willow and Karma are both cooperative in being syringe fed. Your Karma is such a big kitty boy that I imagine it takes two people to hold him down and feed him! Try those Zuke's hip action for cats treats. They will definitely help his arthritis. Tina always liked them and readily ate them and they improved her back tremendously.

Hi Kel.

Glad to hear Willow checked out OK and that she is starting to eat. I'm so sorry about Karma's arthritis, but it seems he's making a good effort toward getting better. Out hearts and thoughts are with you all.

Hi, Kel, thank you so very much for sharing with us how your precious Karma, Willow, and Lancelot are doing. Like DannysMom and Tom's Dad, I too am very glad to share your good news that your precious Willow is progressing in her recovery, and that Karma is also making progress - - both under your and your husband's diligent loving care. The A/D food will not hurt either Karma or Willow. It is best to get food into them however you can at this stage - - and whatever you have in your larder that is healthy for them to have. Please let us know how things go with them.

I'm also very glad to know that your precious Lancelot is continuing to do well. I know seeing him so active warms your and your husband's hearts -- and is an inspiration to your precious Karma and Willow during this time of medical concern.

Kel, I hope today is treating you, your precious Lancelot, Karma, Willow, Earl Grey, and your husband kindly. Please know you, your precious companions, and your husband are in my thoughts and prayers, and please let us know how each of you are doing.

Peace and blessings,

Hi, all. Let me start out by saying Karma is doing quite well atm, eating and active. He's very happy. Willow continues to eat well, and everyone else remains their usual adorable selves. smile.gif All is well, but we had lots of drama with our vet and have ended up switching to a new clinic. After a stressful end of the week and weekend, we thought everything was better and we were very proud of ourselves for getting Karma through that... only to call our vet and find they were pissed off that a) we had been consulting with other vets about what to do and cool.gif dared to disagree with the treatment plan and do what we needed to for Karma.

I tried really hard to communicate that I felt they hadn't listened to us from the start. When we brought Karma to them Thursday, they said nothing was wrong with him. He got worse, and we brought him to the ER, who found nothing in the bloodwork, but said that if he continued, the next step would be a different ER who could do ultrasounds. Also talked to them later and they thought maybe his hip was sore.

Friday, I asked our former vet about a hip x-ray and pain meds. They wouldn't do it, saying he hadn't eaten since Wednesday because he was either stressed or depressed. mad.gif Gee, guess who was right??? So I spoke to the office manager, who was more concerned with making sure we understood why THEY were frustrated with US than finding out if Karma was ok, or what I meant when I said they weren't listening. Yes, we gave meds that were for Lance - but under the advisement of an veterinary internal medicine specialist I am friends with and trust and the vet who USED to work for them but started his own practice - when THEY weren't available over the weekend!! These are people we've worked with for 8 years; we adopted Lancelot and other cats from them. I was so hurt and angry. The office manager suggested we switch to the vet who had left and started his own practice. We were only too happy to. The entire time I was on the phone with her, she continued to suggest that WE were the cause of Karma's hip pain, because we took him to the vet too often trying to figure out what was wrong. blink.gif Are you KIDDING me?

Karma went to see his new(old) vet Tuesday, and he spent TWO HOURS with my husband and Karma. wub.gif He heard a murmur that 4 other vets hadn't. Karma is going to a cardiologist next Friday for an ultrasound to make sure he's ok. Not sure what it'll show, but at least I now feel like we're with a vet who listens to us. This is the vet who has said that my husband and I have the best instincts regarding our cats that he's ever seen. He, without fail, listens to us. When I spoke to him Saturday and was bringing him up to speed about Karma, he said, "If I had a cat like that, I would examine him every day until I figured out what was going on." After I got off the phone with him, I sobbed because, finally, someone was listening to us and believed us when I said something was wrong with my cat.

Karma may need hip surgery after he's cleared by cardiology, but we'll get there when we get there. I feel so much more confidence that whatever this ultrasound shows, we'll be able to handle it with a vet who is meticulous, NOT lazy, and listens to us.

Of course, this all circles back to my dear, sweet Strider. Our new (old) vet used to see Strider, and he adored him. He was so very sincerely sorry when he heard about Strider from us, and when my husband and Karma went to see him, my husband says he was genuinely sad and would miss him. sad.gif And I wonder - had Strider continued to be in his care, would we have caught something that the vet we left missed? I wouldn't be surprised. My heart breaks to think we might have lost Strider because our vet was careless. I know that's an awful accusation, but I can't help but wonder.

Thanks for listening, all. We're getting over the hurt of "breaking up" with our old vet, with whom we thought we had a great relationship. We're so happy to be back with our best vet ever, though. I want to just weep for joy when I think of how relieved I am to have him back on our side. Lance and Earl have checkups next week. I know he's going to be thrilled to see Lance - who continues to do SO well!

Will wrap this up, but I just thought you guys should know how things were turning out. It was all really difficult, but everything happens for a reason.

Hi, Kel, thank you so much for sharing with us how your precious Karma and Willow are doing. I am soo very glad to share your WONDERFUL NEWS that they are continuing to recover from their medical crises. My heart shares your joy and relief.

I can very much relate to your frustration, anger, and sorrow with events you have experienced with your previous veterinary care provider - - people you had trusted for years and who now seem to have a serious change of heart that is not in the best interest of your precious companions. I encountered a similar situation several years ago when a vet I trusted sold her business to a young man who had been in an ER practice and wanted to have a regular practice of his own. He never seemed to listen to me when I took my companions in for check ups, was more pre-occupied with his computer system failure than talking to me when my little girl Abbygayle had pulled one of her stitches from her "female" surgery, and told me essentially the same thing that I was at fault for bringing my number one kitty son Eli in for care when it was his opinion that he didn't need it and then telling me, "You tell me what you want me to do for your cat and I'll do it." (A direct quote that still rings hot in my memory to this day). So I ended up going to another practice who knew Eli had an infection from his temperature but could not find a specific cause for it - - so they treated the symptoms for about a month - - which now looking back were indicators of what eventually evolved into full blown Lymphoma. I have NEVER heard from our current veterinary care providers that I am an "hysterical" client about my precious companions. In a follow up conversation with the previous vet when I called to transfer my companions' records to the new (current) practice I told the vet that, for me, he had broken every basic trust that should exist between a client and a veterinary care provider, and that I could no longer continue entrusting the care of my precious companions to him.

Sadly, veterinary medicine is becoming more like human medicine - - with the "bottom line" being "profit" and not having the appointments filled with what they consider to be "nuisance" clients. You and your husband have done the RIGHT THING in transferring your companions' records to a veterinary care provider who still CARES about his clients, and who is worthy of your trust.

I hope your precious Karma's cardiology evaluation will not show anything serious - - treatable with meds if necessary. Please let us know how things go.

Kel, as always, I hope today is treating you, your precious Lancelot, Karma, Willow, Earl Grey, and your husband kindly. Please know you, your precious companions, and your husband are in my thoughts and prayers, and please let us know how each of you are doing.

Peace and blessings,
moon_beam

I just wanted to update everyone and let you know that things are going well here. Moon_beam, I'm so sorry that you have reason to understand our difficulties with our vet. It's nice to know we're not alone, though.

Karma is doing well. He started taking Dasuquin, and it has helped him tremendously! He is back to his old playful self - better than he's been in a long time. We're so pleased! He went to the cardiologist, who believes he has mild hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He's ten, so that's about the right age. His left atrium looks good, so no meds or anything yet. We'll have a repeat echo in 6 months to see how it's progressing and go from there. For now, he's cleared for hip surgery, so we'll be making that appointment soon with a vet at Tufts who comes highly recommended. We prefer to have him at a large medical center, in case something goes wrong.

We are thrilled to be back with our favorite vet! He's so wonderful. He and my husband are working together to put together a video to promote his clinic. (My husband's degree is in cinematography!) I can't say how much I adore this vet.

Miss Willow continues to do very well. Eating normally, playing - doing all the Willow things that make us happy.

Lance is great. Had a check up with his oncologist last week, unexpectedly. I thought I felt lymph nodes under his jaw, but I was wrong. I'm SO HAPPY to be wrong! :-D His weight is up and his exam is normal. All of his labs are fantastic. He remains FeLV- in terms of serology. His phenobarb level is therapeutic. Couldn't be happier!

Today is our Earliversary! We adopted Earl Grey two years ago today, and he's so wonderful. He's been a little lost without his snuggle-buddy, Strider. However...

We're adopting a new boy!
