I got Miles in December 2003. Penny found me in August 2004. They were my first dogs as an adult. Penny has been gone since August 30th. I miss her terribly.

I am active in several dog rescue groups in our community so I get almost daily exposure to so many sweet faces who are either safe and in a rescue or still in kill facilities. Our vet has told me to "pay it forward" and save another life to honor my Penny girl and also to help Miles. Miles was less than a year old when she came and he seems so lost now that she's gone.

When is it "time?" Some days I feel like a new furry face around the house might help me heal. Other days I feel like I would be replacing Penny and that thought makes me really sad. I know we will never replace her but we do have a lot of love to give.

Lindsey, you wouldn't be "replacing" Penny. She was unique and cannot be replaced. If you feel in your heart you'd like to bring home a companion for you and Miles then by all means go ahead and bring home a sweet fur baby. Even though you'll still be grieving the comfort from a new friend will balance out the grief. Our hearts are big enough to love again, even if it's so soon after having lost a beloved companion.

Hi, Lindsey, thank you so much for sharing with us how you're doing. You are asking a universal question about embracing a new companion into your heart and life. Unfortunately only you can answer this question. Some people find it very comforting to adopt quickly after a companion has joined the angels. Some people wait until the deep sorrow has eased and they feel they can more easily bond with a new soul. Other people bridge the emptiness with fostering and pet sitting for family members and friends until they feel they are ready to adopt a new companion. And some people - - for whatever reason - - never adopt a new companion.

Until YOU feel ready to embrace a new companion into your heart and life, Lindsey, it is really best to wait -- for you, your precious Miles, and your new companion. The decision is up to you, Lindsey - - and ONLY you.

I hope today is treating you and your precious Miles kindly, Lindsey. Please know you both are in my thoughts and prayers, and that I look forward to knowing how you're doing.

Peace and blessing,
moon_beam

The most blessed way I have of knowing God's comforting love and grace is to look into the eyes and heart of God's creatures' sweet angelic face.
