Hi Terri,
How is Duchess doing? How are you doing? Sounds like the anti-nausea is helping with her apetite and maybe she is feeling a bit better now? It's so hard watching your baby be sick and feeling helpless, knowing you'd do anything to make them feel better and take their pain away. We lost our little guy on Sept 8th to liver cancer. He was such a feisty one and a fighter so we really didn't know how sick he was until a week before we had him put to sleep.

I can really relate to what Kimberly said "With Bubbas death it seemed to be a marker in my life where I realized that 14 1/2 years has passed very quickly and I am that much older." Our Dieter was 14 1/2 too, and it only seems like yesterday we were bringing home this tiny bundle of barking fur to love and make our life so much richer.

The members of LS are the most wonderful, loving people and helped me more than I can explain during such a difficult time. Please keep writing and let us know how you are and how we can help.
your in my thoughts
Libby

Thankyou Libby and Kathleen,
Thankyou for your kind thoughts and for asking about Dutchess and sharing your experiences. Dutchess is doing very well... I'm on pins and needles a bit... watching her willing her not to vomit!! She has kept 3 meals in a row down and I'm slowly increasing up to the amount the vet wants her to eat. As well as giving her her insulin. Right now I am not doing anything other than focusing on her... I feel a bit paralyzed..not wanting to do errands that need to be done or housework upstairs..lol..
I'm trying to keep my thoughts positive and avoid negative thoughts... I'm going to start a new post about that.
Tomorow I will have to be back to work..but I do childcare in my home so will be able to be with and tend to her. I have my college age children home that can help if there's any emergency for the next week or so. I'm not sleeping well because I'm on the couch to be downstairs with her. This morning she was so sweet...my Christmas tree lights are on a timer to go on at 6am..cause on work days we have to be up. This morning the lights switched on..I heard her tail thump and she came right over to nuzzle me for food/affection.
This site and all you people have been sent from God... Terri

Terri,
I'm so glad to hear that Dutchess is feeling well enough to wake you up. Diabetes is hard to control in humans, let alone animals. You and your vet should be able to get that under control, but it might take a little bit of time. It sounds like everything you're doing is working. I'm extremely glad to hear that.

Sonnie's cancer is the reason we finally had to lay him to rest on Christmas. A year after we adopted him from a shelter, his back leg started swelling up and no needle would get anything to come out. Our regular vet operated to remove the growth, but it was so mixed in with his tendons, Doc didn't think he got it all. He didn't think it would come back very quickly. Sonnie did very well for a couple of years, but the leg started to swell up again. We thought it was from running so much with Bear and a possible sprain. We made him stay off it as much as possible for a couple of weeks, and that seemed to help the swelling. We went through that off and on for a year or two. The swelling got very bad almost overnight. (The picture I have out with my name shows the leg and it's swelling.) We took him to Doc, and he suggested we get a second opinion and recommended another vet. Rob and I took him over in mid-August and were told it was cancer and the leg should be removed. This upset us so much that we couldn't make a decision for a day or so. I called and set up the time for the amputation - our wedding anniversary. I took off the first couple of days, Labor Day holiday weekend came, and Rob took the next week off to be with him. Sonnie healed very well, and Dr. Zeller was very happy with it. He said he was sure he got it all. For the next three and half months Sonnie was as spry as he was when we first adopted him. He did his best to keep up with Bear, which considering the leg length difference, is saying something! Then, the leg swelled up again. The night before his appointment with Dr. Zeller we found a lump down by the leg and prayed it was a hernia. No luck - his cancer was back and in the lymph nodes. We were devastated. We gave Sonnie the medicine the vet told us to but he was very honest and said there wasn't anything we could do except make him as comfortable and happy as possible. We were only able to do that for a couple of days before he went down hill fast. We did what we had to do to keep Sonnie from suffering very much. God knows we wanted him to be with us for another 6 - 8 years. It just wasn't meant to be.

I'm telling you this so you know that you seem to be on the right track with Dutchess. She's able to keep food down and she's waking you up. Take each day one at a time and help her in whatever manner she needs it. You've done a wonderful job so far, so just continue on. Please keep us updated on her health. It's nice to hear a success story.

May we all have the strength to make the right decisions for our furbabies.

I love and miss you so much, Sonnie-dog.

Terri- how is Dutchess doing? Haven't heard from you in awhile and was thinking of you. Lucy is still taking her prednisone and seems to be hanging in there. I thought she was going to go much sooner so this last couple of weeks has been a real gift. Let me know how things are going...

I'm so sorry your baby is sick. Our girl got sick in Dec. her vet did some test and said she was just fine so we brought her home. Some days she seemed like herself so we didn't take her to a different vet until 2 weeks later. They ran many test and kept her for 3 days, and everyday they told us she was better. The day Jan. 8th we were to bring her home they said she had passed. They believe it was a tumor that just hadn't shown up. They said she bleed bad from the mouth. I'm sorry to say even though we brought her home to bury her, I wasn't brave enough to look. I had to remember her as I knew her. I know just the short time we saw her sick was heart breaking. We only had 7 years but they sure were great ones. She was my first baby ever, I'm very new here but everyone here has been a great help to me, but the tears still flow.I guess we were still lucky that she didn't suffer long. What you are going though has to be so hard I wished I could do more to help, but I will be praying for you both.
Bless you Patty

Thankyou for asking about Dutchess... She has been doing so well. Reading these boards just made me too sad... I want to enjoy the time that we have left with Dutchess. I have wondered about how your chocolate lab is doing..it's so hard to see them in decline. The last few weeks it has been like Dutchess isn't even sick.. she is back to playing..eating with zest.. She has diabetes so need insulin twice a day..but seems like she is regulated. I did notice the last couple of days that her stumach has been gurgling and she is very gassy... and tonight she looks like she's not walking as well. I am scared. Tomorow she is due to go to the vet for the day. They take her blood every hour for her "curve" to see if her insulin needs to be adjusted. I am thankful for this time... we grow closer every day it seems. I know that will make the end even harder. But I do believe it's important to enjoy each day for the blessings it brings. It has been a month since the stumach cancer diagnosis.. I like to think/wish it was all a big mistake. When Dutchess leaves this world she won't be in any pain or worry. I will say to her what the Lord God will say to us, "Well done my good and faithful servant." She has been a wonderful family member and we are blessed to have her. Wishing everyone strength and to trust that your departed pets are at peace. Focus on the great times and love that you shared and continue to love in this world. Patty..I'm so sorry to hear what happened with your sweet girl.. thankyou for sharing your story. Terri
