Last night, one of our cats was attacked and killed by a roaming dog in the neighborhood right in the front of our house. About 9:30PM two kids came ringing our doorbell about a cat they found injured in the road. They said they saw a "big vicious dog" running from the scene. It was dark, but we could tell it was our "Freida" by the small glints of orange that spread throughout her gray coat.
She had a habit of sleeping in the driveway out front near our parked cars. We surmise it was because the pavement was warm, and she liked to sleep on it when it got colder at night. Last night she was barely breathing when my Mom found her, and by the time I got out there, she was gone. I picked her up and brought her under the motion lights, and could see her neck was wet and bleeding. I then thanked the boys for letting us know, and they went on their way. My Mom drove around the neighborhood trying to no avail trying to find the dog. We called the police, and they too drove through the neighborhood trying to find the roaming dog. Freida had been a feral cat, she roamed into our backyard, and was so skinny and mangy, that my Mom put out a dish of food for her. That was over six years ago, and she never left our yard since. She tamed down alot over the years, but would never be able to be kept completely indoors, especially with our older, very territorial indoor cats. She'd become a fixture in our yard, always find unusual spots to lay and roll around, basking in the sun (whenver it shone, we live in Oregon), and would promptly bang with her paws on the our back screen door if we were late with dinner. I will miss her very much. Of course, this happens just before the 1-year anniversary of the untimely death of my Himi "Hannibal", of heart disease last September 15. I hate the universe sometimes. ETA: This morning my Mom drove around again and found a sign posted "DOG FOUND" and a phone number. She called the number and a man answered stating he had found a Pit Bull roaming alone in a nearby park, wearing a collar. He tried to contact the owner, but the number was disconnected, and the address was a vacant lot. The man said he's bringing the dog to the Humane Society tomorrow, since they're closed for the holiday. The park was less than a block from where I live. I'm not positive this is the dog...but I informed the man of the possibility. My Mom buried Freida in the flower garden in one of her favorite spots she always used to lay. She'll now remain in our yard forever. |

I am so sorry for your loss of Freida. It sounds like your family gave her a warm and loving life that was cut short.
You and you family are in my thoughts and prayers. Dugan's Mom Krissyo -------------------- Dugan, not goodbye just till we meet again.

Thank you for posting Freida's story. I'm so sorry for what happened!
Freida is at peace now, in a realm where there's no sorrow or pain of any kind. You and your family are wonderful, and you'll be reunited with sweet Freida when you pass on. In the meantime, you don't have to worry about her well-being. Be gentle with yourselves. Sending prayers your way, Kathy -------------------- Compassion for all animals. www.earthlings.com
