This one woman let her boyfriend give up her cat to the local HS... He must be one heck of a guy... I dated a woman once, after about 2 weeks, that told me to get rid of Simba... I got rid of her instead. The girls go before the cat!

Girlfriends/Boyfriends come and go...
Our furry companions are FOREVER.

Here is what my friend from the HS told me in an email:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I worked last Friday but didn't do any adoptions. Several "cat" intakes - one "dumbo" guy brought his girlfriend's black cat in to the shelter. Reason for surrender: The guy thought the cat was too friendly, didn't like the cat rubbing against him for attention - AND this strange guy said, "well, this cat is eating too much food." The poor cat was very friendly and not overweight at all. I set him up in the cat area and gave him extra food. Hopefully he will make it through the system, but you never know. Sometimes animals get stressed out after being given up and don't pass "eval."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am so tempted to tell her that I want to adopt this cat. I only wish I knew that Simba would approve.

If you have more than one cat how did they do when you brought a new one home after one has been in your home for a while? Does it matter if you have 2 males or should it be male/female? Would 2 males want to fight?

well i am in a single cat household (plus a dog) but was in a 5-8 cat household, depending on the day you asked, when married to my now ex-wife who was a veterinarian (hence, the multi cats...many were unadoptable).

best thing to do is separate them immediately, but let them explore each other, ie: under a door with paws extended, let them sniff each other out for a few days. another good thing to do is rub each cat with a hand towel or cloth and place each cloth into the other cat's living space. whole thing here is to get each of them used to the scent and presence of the other cat. then over some time, you decide, let them get together for bit on their own terms. if you need to put the new cat back into the temporary holding place again, do it. trick is to not intro too quickly.

as for getting along, and this is my opinion folks, 2 male cats (fixed) tend to get along better than a male and female. oh my the fights i have seen between the ***es biggrin.gif the women cats can be quite feisty, while the neutered males are like, well they are like kittycats rolleyes.gif

another suggestion and some people may find it overboard, is to have one box per kitty. that way they can have their own bathroom space as well.

cats get along well most of the time, but you can get oil and water sometimes...as with people, sometimes animals just do not get along. hope that helps!

p.s. i grew up with a cat named simba, a loud female siamese who was pretty mean...only time we could touch her is when she was eating, otherwise the claws and teeth would come out. still, i love the name and love cats. so....

Simba's Dad

We had three cats (Our Annie is gone) and now we have 2 males. The first one into the home was a male; about 3 months later, Annie came. There was Absolutely NO problem with the two, other than interest and perhaps the eldest needed a little reassurance that the new one was not more important than he. They were both young cats, not even a year old. A few years later, we took in another stray male, young but at least a year old. I have to say, things were touchy between the two males. The new one "took over" the litter box and just about everything else. The only dominance the eldest male kept was over the food and feeding! It was quite funny how he became quite timid about every other area, but did not relinquish the food! Anyway, there was always something going on between the two males, but then the younger one is definitely a trouble maker type. He also tried to cause trouble with Annie some (not as much) and she just wouldn't tolerate it!
I do believe that at least in my case, two ADULT males coming into the house separtely, a few years apart, was hard. But we manage and they are both happy here. I think your case may be easier as your Simba 2 has not been there too long??? You being a great cat owner is sure to make it possible if that is what you want. It is hard not to provide a needed home to any animal when they are right there in need, I know.

Best of luck,
annie's mommy

Good advice above, all of it. I have heard that, generally speaking, females tend to be more territorial of especially the house (versus the yard, if they are let out.....with supervision of course!), from my no-kill shelter friend, and that was my observation of this generality as well, but as always, it comes down to individuality, no matter the gender. It probably also has something to do with the guardian's atti*tude as well, and about how much envisioning of them getting along you can do. (I experiment some with this regarding our neighbours' cats, both female - if I maintain a calmer outlook, these two are less prone to growling at each other) And then don't forget the uses of those handy flower essences to help them adjust! (see this entry.) And as I'm sure you know, fixed cats are generally less prone to fighting other cats overall as well, but again, it depends on personality and circu*mstances as well.

This fact alone might help you make up your mind, unless you think Simba would be dead set against the idea:
It is well know within the 'industry' that black cats are usually the first ones killed off, as there's a perception that they're inherently less adoptable due to people's stupid superst*itions about black cats. I'm not making this up, as Dave Barry would say. Independent shelter workers will tell you this if you ask them about it.

As a footnote......yah, nice boyfriends and girlfriends, who are no friends of OURS, eh? My MIL bought us a lovely framed verse that says:
"We got rid of the kids. The cat was allergic." More like it, we all agreed. tongue.gif

Simba's Daddy

In my experience the gender of the cat doesn't make much difference. They are gonna be careful to very upset at first, and keeping them seprate is a huge help. My Butch and Alex HATED each other at first, things were pretty touchy for about 6 months and then...best friends. For 14 years one was not without the other. Two males will not fight more. There is gonna be hissing and growling, it's really not a big deal.

I think the big thing is to give them each a space. Two potty boxes or three is not overkill. (We have two cats and three potty boxes). We feed our cats in different places too. Patience is the key, and letting them work it out. Be sure you find time to give Simba extra loves.

One other thing I'd think about. Simba is alone when you aren't there, he might really love a friend/brother to be with. You are such a good daddy and the kitty sound so special. I think it would be amazing if you guys all got together. smile.gif

Oh and good job on getting rid of a gf who would ask you to get rid of your cat. You really can't trust a person who doesn't have pet fur on their sleeve. biggrin.gif As for the poor woman who was stupid enough to let the bf take her cat to a shelter, well. That guy will probably dump her and then she has nothing, no boyfriend AND no kitty. Karma is a bitch.

Love

I am simply outraged at that post, mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif (jackjackbojack). Thank God there are people like you around. I would have chased that person down in my car and I won't say here what I would have done next. I hope people like that get a taste of their own in the afterlife.....Imagine that, some asking you how much your vet bills are. Yet if you said to someone "Oh what a waste of money sending that loser kid of yours to college" well you can just imagine the response. Why people see animals as so low on the scale of importance in life totally escapes me.

Some people are idiots...

I used to go into this pizza place all the time. Almost every Friday for 2 years. The owner and employees came to know me and we always talked alot... A couple days after Simba went to sleep I went there and someone asked me how my cat was.

I told them he had to be put down and when I mentioned that I paid $425 in vet bills trying to save him the owner yells out "You should have came to me and I would have only charged you .25 cents for a bullet!" Everyone in the place started laughing like it was the funniest thing they ever heard. One was right next to me with a goofy look on his face and I did all I could to not sock him a good one.

Haven't been in there since. I now drive right past the place and an extra mile down the road to go to the next pizza shop. Now, I don't disclose much about my personal life... it's none of their darn business!

There are, unfortunately, a lot of people with that att*itude. Its the whole "just a cat" syndrome.

I would have hit him. Or thrown a plate at him. Something. I'm glad you found a new pizza place smile.gif

This inequality is also evident when people are faced with the costs associated with their human loved one's care (many going into huge debt from which they might never recover) and funds are often raised by the community in charitable drives. But can you even begin to imagine that being done for most animal family members? No. No one would even think of doing the same, or applying the same principles to the situation, unless perhaps it's one of those human interest stories highlighted on TV (for ratings alone, usually). And then, it's seen as 'normal' for people to come pouring out of the woodwork, but few realize the hypocrisy when it's 'just another' animal, no matter their story. People can be such dunderheads.

I, too, refused to frequent a pizza place here, after they had tied up two young puppies outside, with no shelter, food or water, in the dead of winter, leaving them there all day as they ran their business. The Provincial SPCA wouldn't step in, either, claiming they "weren't in distress." Out here that seems to mean nothing more than they're not actually dead yet.....I'm not making this up. Eventually, due to possible bad publicity, they removed their dogs from there, but goodness knows what happened to them after that. (and they're still in solid business, too)

And the abominable excuses for space that I'd written about in Kimberly's thread about her new rescue addition, the ones who left their pelvic-fractured dog outside for 10 days to die or be taken by the no-kill shelter here......I'll just bet no charges were laid against them, either. So, when the authorities who are here to supposedly protect animals operate completely contrary to their stated mandate, is it any wonder the main populace doesn't regard animals in an equal light?

In fact, you should SEE the roadside zoo that's been operating in this Prov. for years and years, and the government keeps letting them get away with dozens of infractions under the laws set out for zoos. Dead and dying animals, filthy water, moldy food, zero enrichment, dangers to the public (people have gotten hurt a few times already), totally unsuitable housing, heating, types of food, mixes of animals in one enclosure (one a predator, the other their prey!), and on and on. It's atrocious. Zoocheck has gotten involved, as has the US Human Soc., all to no avail so far. This is DOCU*MENTED abuse and yet they're still left to operate and stupid people bring their kids there to "educate" them about animals!! I could puke!

But as for coming back as mice, or even another then-abused animal (would that be considered justice then?), how are we to know they might have once been an abuser themselves, just getting their karmic debt applied, or are an innocent victim? And at that point, do we really care anyway? No, we're just going to help them if we can. So they might get their share of love if rescued anyway, in their new form. Something to think about, as life is very mysterious and questionable in this plane.

All that aside, I'm SO happy that little black cat got adopted out to a more respectful and caring family! Those other two people just missed out on a fabulous opportunity to grow beyond their self-centered, arrogant human ways.....and let's just hope that no other animals come their way again until they're ready to stop being so unfeeling and callous. But then, that's not what happened with that other couple, who'd already gotten 2 new puppies, even WHILE their older dog was laying outside injured and uncared for. I have little faith in things changing people like that.

Simba was sitting on my lap for a while today and then right after that he went under my chair to curl up and lay by my feet. There is no way I could even think about giving him up.

Simba's Daddy

What a great picture of your Simba. I love when Majik comes and "hangs out" with me when I'm on the computer. I have a note to remind me to check before I push the chair back, you never know where he might be. If he thinks I've spent just too much time on it without paying him any attention, he jumps up on my lap. It's hard to see the screen with a cat butt in your face. LOL

I'm so happy the kitty found a good home.

I'm hoping they do come back as mice. lol

Give up one of my babies? I'd rather give up an arm or leg or both!

Love

Well, that's easy........you CAN'T! biggrin.gif

Back in the good ol' days, before most of us spent hours at a keyboard and actual paper mediums were utilized (!!lol!!), Sabin used to do the typical cat joke thang, sprawling right across the very middle of the newspaper, or magazine, or whatever we were reading, saying give me a tummy and head rub already, fer cryin' out loud! So I bought a T-shirt that has a Kliban cat laying on the newspaper that someone's holding that says, "Cat Wants Attention" (they also had one with a cat hanging off a screen door that says, "Cat Wants Out" - both of our kids did this, too, when they were young.....well, actually Sabin never did give that one up if he got impatient or kooky enough!)

Feline traditions......ain't they great?! smile.gif
