My Birga got into my purse and ate two full packs of Trident gum with Xylitol. Xylitol can cause a massive insulin release, hypoglycemia, possibly coma, and death if untreated. They are watching her... ready to give her iv. glucose if she needs it.

I'm so fraught I posted in the wrong place...sorry.

Wow, Dayna, I never heard of such a thing...would never have figured a dog would eat gum and then to hear what it can do......well, it sounds like you are on top of it and I'll bet your baby under all those watchful eyes will be okay. But I know it is hard when they are not at home with you.

Did they give you a timeframe for everything to weaken or pass through...like 24 to 48 hours?

She is a healthy girl and strong and you were quick to act. All positive signs.

Prayers and hugs to both of you. Keep us updated.

She's home, though I don't think she feels great, she should be out of the woods as far as a hypoglycemic crisis is concerned. The vet is still concerned about her gut...I think he is worried that a lot of gas could trigger the bloat. He sent me home with a stethiscope so I could listen to her bowel sounds.

I'll keep you posted,
Thanks for your prayers and hugs,
Dayna

Oh, goodness, Dayna! I just happened to catch this before bedtime! I'm glad she's at least back at home already and also that you realized how harmful Xylitol is for animals and got her into Emerg. so quickly. Yes, it's great for humans, but terrible for other species -- just one of those things. That's really good that you got a stethoscope to take home, too, and I'm assuming the vet. told you what to listen for. I'm betting you'll be up all through the night though, checking -- sometimes paranoia can be a good thing, right?

But here's hoping things will settle down quickly and w/o further incident. unsure.gif Man....who'd-a-thunk you'd need to keep your purse in a strong-box?! Hugs and healing thoughts to the both of you from me, too.

Thanks to all for their support and healing vibes sent.

I took the stethoscope back to the vets today. Birga feels well enough to bully Amos, but we took her to see her regular vet anyway. He scheduled her for an ultra-sound tomorrow, just to make sure the paper and foil have cleared her intestines, because we have not found any in her stool.

The conversation we had with her vet about the bloat and geriatric dogs scared me silly though. And just confirmed my decision to cook for the pups.

Love and Thanks again to everyone! wub.gif

Hi Dayna,

You know you're always in my heart and prayers. smile.gif I'm glad to know Birga is coming along wonderfully. Those home cooked meals do wonders don't they? My two are hooked for good. At least I started early in Browser's life and it certainly has helped keep Gidget eating well. smile.gif

Smooches for those pooches and you and Charles too! wub.gif

Hugs,
Beth
