IF IT SHOULD BE
IF IT SHOULD BE THAT I GROW WEAK AND PAIN SHOULD KEEP ME FROM MY SLEEP, THEN YOU MUST DO WHAT MUST BE DONE FOR THIS LAST BATTLE CANNOT BE WON. YOU WILL BE SAD I UNDERSTAND, DON’T LET GRIEF THEN STAY YOUR HAND. FOR THIS DAY MORE THAN ALL THE REST, YOUR LOVE FOR ME MUST STAND THE TEST. WE’VE HAD SO MANY HAPPY YEARS, WHAT IS TO COME CAN HOLD NO FEARS, YOU’D NOT WANT ME TO SUFFER SO, THE TIME HAS COME TO LET ME GO. TAKE ME WHERE MY NEED THEY’LL TEND, AND PLEASE STAY WITH ME UNTIL THE END. HOLD ME FIRM AND SPEAK TO ME. UNTIL MY EYES NO LONGER SEE. I KNOW IN TIME THAT YOU WILL SEE, THE KINDNESS THAT YOU DID FOR ME. ALTHOUGH MY TAIL ITS LAST HAS WAVED, FROM PAIN AND SUFFERING I’VE BEEN SAVED. PLEASE DO NOT GRIEVE IT MUST BE YOU, WHO HAS THIS PAINFUL THING TO DO, WE’VE BEEN SO CLOSE, WE TWO, THESE YEARS DON’T LET YOUR HEART HOLD BACK ITS TEARS. FOR I AM NOW IN A BETTER PLACE, AND WILL BE WAITING TO SEE YOUR HAPPY FACE. SO WHEN YOU CROSS THAT FINAL BRIDGE, LOOK FOR ME …. I’LL BE STANDING NEXT TO THE FRIDGE. Author unknown |

Thanks for the poem. You must have lost Sherman. You need to tell us about him. I lost my Bichon Raggs (almost 16yrs old) July 5th I had to have him put to sleep. This forum helps to just write down your griefs and I feel helps keep our furbabies alive. My Raggs will be pushing Sherman aside trying to get into the fridge.

Oh, that's a wonderful poem - thank you so much for it. In these times of grief and heartbreak, that last line just made it perfect.
I'm very sorry for what loss you had which inspired you to post the poem. I've been so down lately from so many things, animal and human, and I'd like you to know that you brought a smile to my face, along with the tears. Again, I'm sorry for your loss, but I thank you so much for this light in my day. Take care - Barbara |

I am sorry for your loss, but found your poem very beautiful, and the last line, made me smile through my tears. Our Scooter, when he was young, used to love to jump into the fridge. We always had to be careful when we opened it, to check before we closed it to make sure he hadn't snuck in. Sometimes he had. Thank you for reminding me of that silly little memory of Scooter's habit.
