I am an animal lover but I am wondering if some people love deeper than others. On Sunday, August 28th, 2011, my orange tabby, Vandy, who is declawed, slipped outside. It is all my fault. I realized it an hour and a half later. I have had my baby since he was a kitten and will be six on September 4th. Today is September 2nd, the fifth day, that Vandy simply vanished without a trace. This would never have happened if I had not been so careless. I live in the country but slowly sub-divisions are developing out here. I have gone door to door, made signs, put flyers on mailboxes if person not at home---all within a five mile radius of where I live. Of course I have signs up at the vets and have registered at the humane shelter. Offering a $500.00 reward which is nothing. I just want my baby back. I have combed the woods calling and calling---even looking for his body in the event a wild animal got him. I have been so upset that my doctor put me on medication to help me get through this. Does anyone out there have any suggestions? Is there something else I should be doing? When will this pain lessen and how do you stop the sobbing attacks that come out of the blue? I am a complete and total mess but have to stay stable to keep searching. Please someone out there, help!! I finally googled this and discovered this web site.

Hi, I Miss Vandy, please permit me to offer you my sincerest sympathies at this time of great sorrow while your precious Vandy is missing. The "not knowing" is very unsettling, to say the least. Have you contacted the local newspapers to place a "lost" advertisement there? And also you might check with your local TV and radio stations. Sometimes they will do free public service announcements for lost and missing companion animals. Have you placed him on the internet with Pet Finder and other lost companion animal websites?

Unfortunately our beloved companions can be very adept at "sneaking out" - - even when we try our very hardest to be alert and protect them from "temptation." They also have the genetic trait of being "opportunists" - - of waiting however long it may be - - for that one moment -- that one flickering millisecond - - when the lure of escape looks possible. For most of my life I have been a "kitty mom" - - so I do know some of their "psychology." So, please try not to overwhelm yourself with guilt about this.

If you are worried about your Vandy's survival without his front claws, I assure you he will be able to hunt for food and climb trees very successfully without them. So, please try not to worry too much about this. Continue to go looking for him, calling him, checking with others living close by, checking in with local vets and rescue shelters to keep him on top of the "missing in action". You may also want to take his favorite food with you when you go looking for him so that if you do see him, you will be able to entice him closer to you so that you can pick him up. You may also want to take a carrier with you so that you can put him safely inside the carrier while you're headed back home - - so that he doesn't jump out of your arms and take you on a merry chase again. Believe me - - been there done that.

I Miss Vandy, what you are feeling - - fear, anger, guilt, frustration, - - fear - - is normal. Your precious Vandy is lost. You have no idea where he is and how he's getting along - - as his mom you are TERRIFIED. Crying is a very healthy thing to do, for it releases the toxins that build up in the body from the stress you are under. It is important for you to keep your strength up - - even if it's just having a cup of broth. Your body needs to be strong to deal with the stress and as well as your efforts to continue searching for your precious Vandy.

Unfortunately our escape artists can take their leisurely time in returning to us, and is done pretty much when they're ready and on their terms. Therefore it is important that you continue to call his name when you're outside for he can hear your voice for quite a distance - - and continue to let him know that you love him and want him to come back home.

I Miss Vandy, I do hope and pray that you will have a joyful reunion with your little boy, and that it will be very, very soon. I hope I have been able to give you some helpful suggestions, and equally important -- comfort, support, and HOPE. Please know you and your precious Vandy are in my thoughts and prayers, and look forward to knowing how things are going.

Peace and blessings,
moon_beam

Hi moon-beam and thank you so much for writing back to me. Just knowing that someone else has gone through this and survived has been a tremendous help. I have just come in from calling Vandy and have posted additional flyers. A friend is checking with the radio stations to see if she can find one that will run an advertisement for me. I am doing anything and everything I possibly can to find him. Your email was most comforting when you stated Vandy would be OK despite the fact that I had his front claws removed. I've never been through anything like this--ever. Please know your taking the time to write and the suggestions that you made gave me the first breath of fresh air I have had since Sunday morning. I live outside of Birmingham, Alabama and we are expecting rain from Tropical Storm Lee by tomorrow--I am hoping and praying that this will bring Vandy home as he is scared of thunderstorms. Thank you again for writing and please know your caring has eased my pain and lessened my sorrow--I will keep posting.

I Love Vandy

Hi, I Miss Vandy, thank you so very much for sharing with us how you're doing. I'm so glad I was able to give you suggestions to help you in your search. If someone has picked up your precious Vandy posting him on the pet finder websites will help reach out beyond your immediate area. Keep in mind that some youngsters can be gone for several weeks, months even - - and then one day - - show up on their home door step as though they have never been away. Oh, the stories they could tell if we could speak with them in a common language on this side of eternity!!!! So, please do not lose hope or become discouraged, although I know how difficult this can become as time progresses. I, too, am hoping and praying that your precious Vandy will hustle himself back home to your loving arms, and please do let us know how things are going.

Peace and blessings,
moon_beam

Moon-beam---I am a little bit technically challenged. I went to Petfinder.com but could not figure out how to post and could not find directions to post for a missing pet? I have posted with the Greater Birmingham Humane Shelter website as well as with www.al.com---which is the site for The Birmingham News so it is in the paper as well as available for viewing statewide. But I went to Petfinder.com and could not figure out how to post? Is that the correct site? And if there are other national sites that you know of, I would appreciate your sharing at your convenience. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Hi, I Miss Vandy, unfortunately I, too, am technology challenged, and do not know how to post to petfinder, BUT - - your local humane shelter should be able to help, I think. Your local humane shelter may have a link to pet finder - - so you can upload the picture on their website and have it linked to petfinder. If you do not have success with them, check with your vet - - perhaps one of the vet techs or receptionists would be able to help you. And if all else fails, there may be a "contact us" link on petfinder where you can request assistance.

I hope this helps you, and that you will have success in getting a picture and notice about your precious Vandy on petfinder. I hope you will have a peaceful evening, and look forward to knowing how you're doing.

Peace and blessings,
moon_beam
