Several days ago, my Gidget vomitted during the middle of the night. The next morning she seemed alright after breakfast. She went to work with my hubby like usual, but seemed less lively than usual. On the way home from work she began to get sick from both ends. Later in the evening she refused any food or water, so the next morning we took her to see the vet. She's been on IV fluids, antibotics, and pain meds. The doc says she has pancreatitus that seems to have been triggered by an unknown parasite. This has also caused a heart murmur she didn't have before. Gidget has no control at all over her bowels and as fast as the water runs through her it comes out her other end, mixed with blood. Her condition is weak tonight, but stable. In the morning, my hubby and I are going to see her with the hopes of trying to coax her into eating something so a stool sample can be taken. We've done all we can and the doc has too. The rest is left in God's hands.

My Gidgie girl is the most precious little sweetheart. Her sweeter side never came out until after Goliath passed away, when she mourned for him right along with me for months. When we brought Browser home this last spring, the very best side of Gidget came out that surprised us all. She adopted him as her own and they haven't been separated since the day they met. Browser is looking all over for her and I'm sure she's wondering where we are right now. I called the hospital just before I came on tonight for an update and her condition hasn't changed. I asked if they'd put extra blankies with her because she loves to burrow under the covers. The powerlessness I am feeling right now is almost unbearable because there is nothing more I can do to help her, except pray for her recovery.

Dear friends, please leave your thoughts and prayers for my Gidgie Girl. The last time I posted a topic about her was this last May when she had a tumor in her face. I believe in the power of prayer and know many of you prayed for her then and I am asking you again to do the same. Not for me........but for her. I need to see her run down the stairs again on her two front feet with her back legs hiked up high and make me laugh. I need to see her rough housing with baby brother Browser. I need to see her well and happy again. When I crawl into bed tonight, I know I will miss her grrrrrrrrrr when she is disturbed under the covers. I want that lump under the covers right back where it belongs.

Thank you all for listening. I feel better having typed this out before I lay down to sleep for the night.

Thanks Sissy! I can't seem to be able to go to sleep. My body is tired and my mind is on full alert. I love her soooooooooooo much and I can't stand the thought of her being so sick. She's always been my mighty one who has pulled through c i r c u m s t a n c e s when even the vets thought she wouldn't survive from the time she was but a wee puppy. At 12 weeks old she had a reaction to a lepto vaccine that put her into kidney failure, unable to move. Another time she got ahold of 3 oz. of wine that completely immobilized her and left her hospitaled for 3 days. Not to mention her allergic reaction to a bee sting when she was smelling the flowers. Each and every time she showed her strength and will to survive.

Thanks so much for coming by Sissycat................it means sooooooooo much to me and Gidge.

Hugs, Beth

2:30 a.m. Talked to the hospital a few minutes ago and Gidget was vomitting again. sad.gif First time since Wednesday with the vomitting and all I could do after hanging up was to start singing what she loves most. I LOVE MAMMA'S GIDGIE GIRL......I LOVE MAMA'S GIDGIE GIRL.......I LOVE MAMA'S GIDGIE GIDGIE GIRLLLLLLLLLLLLLL. Gidget lays her face on my cheek when I sing that to her. I called back and Matt, the vet tech, held the phone to her ear so she could hear me and he said her ears perked up. I told him she loves to be held and God bless Matt............ he said he would make sure she has some hold time this morning on his watch because he is known as the dog whisperer at the hospital and more times than not.....makes a connection. I've been praying sooooo long and have not been to sleep for nearly 48 hours now.

Thank you sooooooooo much Toonie and Dayna. I love you both sooooooooo very much and feel myself humbled. I'm usually the one who takes on a caregiver role and neglect myself both in my professional life in heathcare for humans as well as my personal life. So, it has always been hard for me to let others console me. Perhaps I did need to get knocked down a peg or two. Your frienships means the world to me and I wouldn't trade either of you for any worldly treasure. Your friendships live in my heart and I am thankful for people like you. How truly blessed I have been throughout my life! wub.gif

Huggers,
Beth

Oh, Holy Smokes, Beth....this is such awful news! I can well imagine what a mess you're feeling like right now, and I'm so horribly sorry that Gidget, you and your family are going through this awful time.

Will your clinic not let you come and sit with Gidget today, even if it's only on and off so you're not 'in their road'? Perhaps you could ask (or even beg!) them to allow this, telling them that you know she'd do so much better with you there by her side? (they often mistakenly believe, or that's what they claim anyway, that animals do WORSE when they're people are there....bunch of nonsense, that is) I managed to get a few more "visitation rights" from even an ER here (when Emerg. places are notoriously against allowing this) when Sabin was so ill, by pleading with them a bit. And once they saw for themselves that I was able to get him to eat, when they hadn't had ANY luck whatsoever themselves, they let us sit with him & feed him once in awhile through the day. I also got this arrangement, but to the max, at the clinic where Nissa had her extensive dental surgery, even accompanying her right to the operating table until she was anesthetized. It's often just worth asking for whatever you can get.

In any case, my prayers and vibes of healing thoughts will be with Gidget today (and the rest of you, too). If you can at ALL manage it, even if only in spurts, try to create mental pictures in your head of what you'd rather see, imagining your feelings of relief and joy instead. I know this may be impossible for you, but if you can....

And another thing you could do that might help you feel a little less powerless and would definitely help your baby girl is to sit and imagine her in your lap (or wherever is usual for her) and stroke and pat her as if she were right there. Trust me, this isn't mumb-jumbo - they feel your energetic presence with them that way and that, of course, helps them know you're with them. It also can help calm YOU down a bit, so it's good for everything.

We ALL want your little girl to get through this, just as she's done before!!, and we'll all be waiting to hear from you...

Many hugs and much love,
F's Mom

Your healing thoughts are truly appreciated by me and my family Furkidlet's Mom. We're hanging in there and so is Gidget.

The treating vet encourages visits and we have been going to see her. smile.gif We'll be going back around 1:00 this afternoon to see if we can arouse her appetite with a small amount of her favorite Innova stew. By the time we get there , the results of her heart ultrasound will be available as well. When she sees us and Browser her little tail just goes crazy. She's very upbeat this morning but is no where near coming home as yet.

Thanks for encouraging me with those positive vibes! I've had some rest now and am much more calm. Please know I am also thinking of you today. I know this has been a rough time for you as well. Tomorrow is Goliath's birthday too, so I'm feeling a bit more sensitive than usual. Perhaps our kids are having a birthday party and talking about us too! wub.gif

Hugs and love right back atcha,
Beth

Oh, that's SO good to hear - all of it! I feel like even I can breathe a little better now!

You might also want to take some chicken (not beef!) baby food along, just in case she doesn't go for the Innova. Plus, chicken baby food tends to constipate, if anything.....and many animals really like it, too. It's a great standby for failing appeti*tes. So is homemade (unseasoned) chicken soup, actually, which would also help her re-hydration, and you could even add a bit of Vit. C powder, Vit. Bs and some Vit. E oil (dosages based on weight) to it to help with the stress and her recovery. (SISU is a good brand of Vit.C in the proper form)

Nissa had a small heart murmur, too, that worsened only a little after her blood pressure went through the roof that one time. Heart murmurs are often not anywhere near as alarming as many vets will claim, from what I learned, unless they're of a certain high value/#, so try not to fret TOO much about that, at least not for now. We simply put Nissa on heart glandulars (that at present we can't even get in Canada anymore, thanks to our stupid government!), more as a precaution, and those held her up just fine in that department. (they're very tasty, too, to animals)

You might even try one of those "green smoothie" recipes for doggies that I'd just posted about here the other day, for added nutritional support as Gidget is trying to recover. I'd recommend the Fido's Dream one, as apple pectin (found in the apples) is very good for diarrhea, whereas bananas (in the other one) could be gas-producing, which she sure doesn't need right now. I also have a wonderful and very easy recipe that uses Slippery Elm Bark powder that is excellent for either diarrhea or constipation and is extremely soothing to all mucous membranes in the body & can sometimes be mixed right into food...but for that one, it can't be given w/i about 1-2 hrs. of drugs or other some other supplements (mucks with absorption rates).

There are also some very good supportive homemade diets around for pancreati*tis, too, btw. Smaller meals throughout the day are recommended for this condition, so if she's not eating too much all at once, that's actually not a bad thing for her now.

I've asked Nissa and Sabin to help Gidget out if they can....and THEN they can go back to their whoop-up with Goliath! wink.gif

Keeping my fingers crossed for you all! Hang in there...

I'm hoping they let you stay with Gidget today, and then I hope you get some sleep I'm so glad to hear she's feeling a little better today. I've been so worried about her, and you.

My vet tells me these cardiac arrhythmias are common in cases of acute pancreatitis. As FKM said they are not, necessarily a huge worry.

love to you all, especially Gidgie wub.gif

Furkidlet's Mom, you never cease to amaze me. Your suggestions are always welcome and very much appreciated. Most definately I will take you up on the diet recipes. Anything that may help Gidget is something I am open to.

Gidget did eat for us yesterday when we went to visit with her. She's always been a nibbler and never a gobbler, so we were happy to see her eat. We hand fed her and she ate about two tablespoon of her favorite can food. Then around 4:00 in the afternoon, we went back and she ate for us again. Last night around 7:00 she ate even more. I am so relieved she is eating again and the best part is that she kept it ALL down! Your idea of the baby food is a great one and we plan to stop at the store on the way to the clinic this mornig and get some.

The doc will call us this morning before we head over to visit. She's been very good to Gidget and to us. The entire staff is very personable and caring. I'm so glad we found this clinic last year. We talked about all kinds of things including diet and vaccines. It was refreshing to hear her share her beliefs about both. She agrees that most vets over vaccinate animals which does cause disease and sickness. I admire her open mindedness about these subjects as she doesn't hold onto old school ideas.

I think the vibes you sent out helped alot. Sabin and Nissa can return to their "whoop-up" with Goliath now! Your kids are special angels, that's for sure and you are an angel on earth!

Thanks for all your ongoing support and love. You've made this whole ordeal much easier for me to handle. Please do send any other recipes you may come across. That Fido's Dream sounds delicious and nutricious. I think Gidget will love it too because apples are one of her favorite snacks.

Huggers,
Beth

Thanks so much for coming by Dayna. I'm sure you read my last post to Furkidlet's Mom so you know Gidget is keeping food down now. We aren't real alarmed about the heart murmur as the vet also told us the same thing that your vet told you. Gidget does have some edema around the heart and we plan to take a closer look at that in a week or so. Right now I am just feeling so happy about her just eating again.

Your ongoing support and love is appreciated sooooooo much Dayna. You've always been such a wonderful and caring friend.

I'll bring an update later today or tonight after we have talked again with the treating vet and visited with Gidget.

Hugs to you and the furries,
Beth

Beth, that's such good news! I'm so glad she's eating okay now and hope things just keep getting better, and more stable, and better...

After reading up more on pancreati*tis myself, for the green smoothie, check with your vet to see if this recipe is okay or not. It may NOT be, considering the info. (see below*) from Dr. Pitcairn's recommendations, so you might be better off just using a high-quality "green food" supplement, such as possibly Enerex's "Greens RX" powder, or "Missing Link" animal supplement, or some of Kim Sheridan's (of Animals & the Afterlife) nutritional products she's developed for all creatures: healthforce.com I used various ones, depending on what exactly was going on at any one time, or if something in Nissa's conditions changed. (I'd do research then swing that by our one or two vets to make sure I wasn't contraindicating anything)

If Gidget's already eating regular food and keeping it down, there may be no need to use the baby food, which is something you wouldn't want to use more than you have to, as it's not nutritionally-balanced, being pure protein. But if you do need it, you could start with it plain, adding a bit of purified water if need be (it's kinda dry), but the guidelines are to start adding other balancing ingredients ASAP (if they're accepted okay), such as a small amount of raw egg yolk (organic egg the best), some vitamins (again, your vet would have to work out the dosages of each one chosen, according to weight &/or other 'complicating' factors), possibly a bit of mushed-up cooked whole grains, &/or some steamed veg's...just so it's not just pure protein and to ward off constipating effects from the baby food.

For the Slippery Elm Bark powder mixture, first, go buy yourself some of the powder! happy.gif (health food stores usually carry this) Then, boil 1/2 pint purified water. Slowly whisk in 1 tsp. of the powder and keep mixing/whisking until it's dissolved and then slightly thickened - should be almost as thick as raw egg white. Store in fridge for only a few days, e.g. 3-4. Give about 1 tsp. of the mixture (at room temp.) per day [this dose for cats, so depends on how big or small Gidget is], either directly in mouth (via syringe, with breaks for swallowing, natch) or mix with food if they'll accept it that way (it does have a slight flavour). You can use a bit more/day if needed, or split up the one dose in two and give 2x/day instead. If this doesn't stop diarrhea w/i about a day or two, you'd need other measures either too or instead of. If using this for the opposite (constipation), it may also take a couple of days to work. You can also use this mixture for any mucous membrane irritation, from either end, so it's also wonderful for sore or irritated throats, gums, etc. (for humans, put a larger amt. of the mixture in tea or other hot beverage, for same applications) It also worked very well for Nissa's acid reflux and nausea whenever she had that - again, soothes the insides. (for her tiny size of under 6 lbs., I'd only use about 1/4-1/2 tsp. per application) You'll find Slippery Elm added to most natural throat lozenges now. And as I'd said, an hour or so away from other supplements or any drugs you might be using. (better if given before the others, to help protect the stomach lining, too)

A few other great supplements to start using regularly, no matter the condition, are:
1.)digestive enzymes ("Prozyme" is a popular one for animals), and
2.)"Transfer Factor" by 4Life online (the human or animal one called their "Advanced Formula" seemed to fit the bill for pretty much anything, as opposed to some of their animal-only formulas, which some people didn't find as good for one reason or another). Nissa LOVED her little T.F. daily drink! Tastes 'cheesy' to animals. (must be taken with water, away from food): Transfer Factor distributor. See their main site for more info. - 4Life sitemap, and
3.) probiotics to balance/replenish healthy gut bacteria....esp. important if Gidget's picked up bad bacteria and also great to ward off or alleviate diarrhea. I use an expensive but fabulous brand called "HMF Forte" by Genestra Brands. (used the same one for both Nissa and myself)

For homemade diets for pancreati*tis, I know Dr. Pitcairn says to just use his basic raw dogfood recipe from his book, but change up a few things, such as omitting veg. oils or butter and other fatty foods that can irritate the pancreas, using Vit.A capsules over codliver oil , using Vit. E for sure (to help prevent pancreatic scarring), emphasizing corn (pref. raw; and to my mind, non-GMO, organic!) and raw, grated cabbage (in the food recipe), and to *avoid fruits....plus a number of other recommendations, like serving food at room temp., regular use of Vit. C & bioflavonoids, and the like. You might want to pick up his book, "Natural Health for Dogs & Cats", where he gives all info. for these and other suggestions like herbals to try, and homeopathics to try [and how to dose each of these] You have to go back and forth between pages to get ALL the info. straight, so it's a bit too extensive to type all out here. There are also a number of basic natural dogfood recipes in "Food Pets Die For" by Ann N. Martin, some of which would follow Pitcairn's guidelines for pancreati*tis and including some 'treat' type recipes, too. Or do searches online for some other, newer homemade diets for this condition. Unfortunately, the only other ones I have already are for cats, not dogs, but I know I've seen pancreatic diets online before and there are also usually specific group forums around for those dealing with certain dis-eases/conditions - a wealth of info. & a means to share experiences!

I'm very happy that your newer vet is more up-to-date with things. That alone will help a lot! If she doesn't happen to know specific dosages for vit.'s and supplements, ask if she knows anyone who does. If not, you'll have to do your own research online &/or with the help of any holistic vets who work by phone, or have info. on their websites. (I know I'd listed a link to some of them, somewhere here before). Or use a book like Dr. Pitcairn's. Or Dr. Goldstein's The Nature of Animal Healing/Dr. Marty.com. My own library of cat/animal health books grew over the years and I consulted them all as needed, then ran things past Dr. Hamilton and our local integrative/holistic vet to find JUST the right combo. of "bests" to use for Nissa, which often required some juggling due to her different dis-eases.

For specific homeo. remedies to consider, I'll PM that info. to you sometime today or tomorrow. You might even consider as well, the use of the liquid crystal remedy, Topaz, for pancreati*tis, if you can find it.

You're very welcome, Beth, for whatever I can hook you up to that might help your dear girl out. "If only" I was a vet myself! Then you could just book an appt. with me! laugh.gif

Hope everything just keeps looking up!

Many thanks to all of you who sent prayers and thoughts for my sweet Gidgie. She was able to come home last night after holding her food down all day yesterday. I've started making meals for her and will continue to do so, at least until I know we have a handle on this.

Thanks so much Furkidlet's Mom for the info about recipe books and other sources I can tap into to begin learning more about a diet that settles better with her. So far the chicken and rice along with sweet potatoes, peas, and carrots is what she seems to like the best. I am going shopping after work to pick up some other groceries to make up some other meals for her as well.

Everybody's ongoing support has brought me comfort and I appreciate each and every one of you very much.

Hugs to all,
Beth

When I saw this picture I thought of Goliath ...with unseen arms wrapped about his ailing sister. Vigilantly keeping watch over her.

I hope she's continuing to improve.
