A> Don't head to the pound just yet. While a new addition may cheer up some dogs, others may become even more upset by the change. After all, she would likely be competing for attention with the younger, more active dog.
Instead, perk up your pooch with tough love. "When she is moping, don't fawn over her," advises Bonnie Beaver, DVM, a professor of small-animal medicine and surgery at Texa A&M University's College of Veterinary Medicine. She'll wind up repeating the behavior simply for the attention."
It is better to reward and encourage her playful moments. For example, give her a belly scratch after she's chewed her favorite toy. Keep her active, too; exercise will increase the flow of feel-good endorphins and result in a happier doggie.
If your pup's mood doesnt turn around in a few weeks after taking these steps, make an appointment with your vet. A medical condition could be contributing to her lethargic behavior.
