Hello all,
I'm a new member here today, and I'm so glad I found a site like this. My 10yr old Golden Retriever is going in for surgery tomorrow. He has 2 lumps being removed, one on his right hip and one on his torso. The one on his hip has been tested before and they have said it was a fatty deposit, but its pretty big, so they're going to remove it. The major concern is the one on his torso which was also previously tested to be fat but that one has really grown and is much larger than the one on his hip. I'm so afraid what they might find in that one once they go in due to it's size. Also, my dog has AIHA which was diagnosed just this past April. He has been doing beautifully since the initial and continous treament for it, but this poor dog has been through so much over the last few months I'm just worried sick about tomorrow. It's all I can think about today. I just want everything to go well for him and I keep trying to keep my head up, but I just can't help it. They say I may be able to pick him up tomorrow night, but he may have to stay over and I can get him Thanksgiving morning. All I want to do is be able to bring him home. I guess I'm wondering if anyone here has a pet with AIHA and if they've been through anything similar? |

I haven't had to deal with anything like that, but I hope everything goes well with the surgery.

Hi there!
My thoughts and prayers are with your furdog now, as he awaits surgery tomorrow... And, of course.........my thoughts and prayers are with you.......that whatever the veterinarian finds, be BENIGN!!!!! I am not familiar with 'AIHA', can you please let us know what it is??? Thanks....... Do you know if there is "a special site" for "AIHA"??? If you're not sure, you may want to check with American Academy/Association of Veterinary Medicine... The only reason I ask if there is "a special site", is that our sweet Ms. Lucy (a furkitty-age 7 & 1/2), was diagnosed with diabetes, not too long ago, and they do have a website for diabetes............ But I feel MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE coming here, to Lightning Strike..........where I have been here since early February, 2004, after our precious Ernestine was put to sleep. Here, I am among many, many special friends, who I consider to be FAMILY  ....I sincerely hope that you will be able to bring your sweet furdog  home tomorrow night, if he is doing well enough to be discharged from the veterinarian's care.......If they feel that he should be there until Thanksgiving Day......What better present?? Hi I do hope that everything goes well during the surgery and that he will be able to come home right away. I know how hard it is to think about surgery at his age but most dogs survive and do well after. So lets just hope and pray that he will do just fine and have a speedy recovery.
I have never had a dog with AIHA but I looked it up on the internet and am sorry to hear he has this but glad he is doing well. Let us know how his surgery goes. Both had cancer, Snookie had cancer of the liver, and Chili Bean had cancer of the pallet. Chili Bean was our son's chihuahua but we kept her often throughout her life and she stayed with us for the last 9 months of her life. Chili Bean also had asthma and heart failure. Thank you all for you prayers and wishes... (((HUGS)))
We're getting ready to head to the vet in about a 1/2 hr. He (his name is Jack) is kinda upset with me this morning 'cause I couldn't give him his breakfast  but as soon as I said "wanna go for a ride?" all appeared to be forgiven. AIHA is: AUTOIMMUNE HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA basically Jack's white blood cells attack his red blood cells giving him severe anemia. Luckily we caught it in time. It appeared in Jack with no warning, and no apparent cause. Here's a good website for more on AIHA: Meisha's Hope there's some more informational links at the bottom of her hompage. Again... thanks you all so VERY VERY much! I'll give you an update on my "big blond guy" as soon as I hear something. |

Well Jack made it through! The vet said he was nothing but sweet and polite, and that he "is a very sweet old man". They didn't get to actually do the surgery on him till about 6pm last night, but I just called and they said he's doing well enough to come home this morning.
Gonna have to give him some TLC over the next few days.. he has 2 drains that they say are draining pretty bad, but they said that's what their supposed to do. The lumps did prove to be pretty large and somewhat invasive. Apparently they were so large they couldn't get it all. The results of the biopsy should be back in a week. But for now, he's doing ok. I can't think of a better gift that I can bring my dog home this Thanksgiving and that you guys were so wonderful through the past couple of days. Thanks again all for all your support.
